Dogwoods, Amen at the Corner, and Green Jackets: It's Masters Time!

Paul Lawrie was 10 stokes down to the imfamous Jean Van de Velde in the 1999 Open.He won in a four hole playoff.

Lawrie started the final round 10 strokes out of the lead. More than an hour after he had posted his 4-under 67, he stood on the practice green as Van de Velde marched to the 18th tee with a three-stroke lead.

Then, he heard the moans.

Needing only a double bogey on the final hole to become the first Frenchman in 92 years to win the British Open, Van de Velde was lucky to make triple bogey and get into a playoff

Van de Velde made light of his 1999 Open collapse in a humorous Never Compromise infomercial in which he replayed Carnoustie’s 18th hole in the dead of winter with only a putter in an attempt to best the seven strokes that cost him the championship. He succeeded on his third attempt

That’s the best scenario for a comeback. Someone puts up a 65 while the leaders shoot 73’s.

8 strokes. Jack Burke in 1956. He actually fell to nine back during his round and came all the way back. Gary Player was eight back in 1978 and won. In 1996 Nick Faldo came from 6 back of Greg Norman and won, but he was in second place and playing with Norman.

There were at least six guys ahead of Player in 1978 when he put up a final round 64.

P.S. Burke won $6,000 for winning in 56. Ben Hogan tied for 8th and won $976.

It aint outa reach for anybody. In 2007 Goose qualified for the weekend on the cut line,10 strokes out ,held the lead for a short time on late sunday(16th,Ithink) before Zach Johnson took over.

Maybe 14,I am hazy on the details…I think it was on 15 when goose decided to lay up that cost him.

Speaking of Gooses,Tigers,Sharks,Ducks and Walruses,do any of the critter nicknamed golfers use animal-themed club covers like Tiger does?

Steve Flesch is -3 through 4 holes, so going low is indeed possible.

I sure would like Padraig to win(or Lyle…that would be cool)…but I’m pulling for Cabrera.

Knocking a second shot into the hole from a fairway is a hard act to follow.

Lefty coming on …

Phils on Phire.

OMG whatta shot from Phil.

I don’t even like the guy.

He could make this fun. Only 2 back and the leaders are in a par frame of mind. To suddenly get unexpected pressure will add a little kick.

Just you and me Gonz…what are yer thoughts?

Cabrera looks steady…look out phor phuryk.

Gusty winds at Augusta on Sunday. These are the conditions that make the Masters so great, but it can come down to a lucky break. If a gust of wind comes up with your ball in the air on Amen Corner, a perfectly struck shot can end up in the water.

OK, Tiger just eagled eight. I guess I know what I’m doing for the next three hours.

Another birdie for Phil. I am not a fan, but I have to give him credit - he is tearing up the front nine.

I like Nick Price, but he sure likes to talk about his green jackets.

Nick Price??

Do you mean Nick Faldo?

Furyk, Woods, Mickelson, could make this VERY interesting Sunday afternoon. As they say, it doesn’t REALLY start until the back nine on Sunday.

Whoops…yes

It started at two today.

There you go, you will be happy to see that infomercia… excuse me, Masters history moment.

Craig Stadler has had a Walrus Headcover for years. Not sure if he still does.

I think Norman had a shark cover.
