Today the mighty IKE is transitting the Suez Canal (South to north is a good thing)!
We were at anchorage all evening and got underway this morning at about 0500. We are leading a convoy of some 29 ships from the Great Bitter Lake to the Mediterranean Sea. We’ll be leaving the +100 temperatures of the Red Sea and dip into the cool (85-90 degrees) breezes of the Med.
This will be the last time I ever “Do the Ditch” – my tenth time.
Yeah, it’s mundane. But I just wanted to tell someone. 20 and a wup!
Congratulations! I was thinking about you yesterday, I read an article in S&S about sailors on shore leave (right term?) in Rota. Never before have I seen the words “sex starved” and “drunk” so many times in a newspaper story. Can’t wait to see what they write when the Ike lands in Portugal. Or is it docks? You Navy people talk funny!
tt – Is there anyway you can frward a copy of that story to me. Being a PR type, I’m curious as to ship and spokesman quoted.
yojimbo – I should have made that statement thusly: “I anticipate this will be blah, blah, blah…”
The IKE is scheduled to go in the yards after our return. I’ll be aboard for another year and a half. After this tour, I’m up for four years of shore duty. Then I’ll retire.
I’ve still got the paper and your address. I’ll put it in the mail tonight. Personally, I thought the article made the Navy guys look like a bunch of dumbasses. You’ll see why when I mail it. Or do you have a fax? I could fax it if you give me the number?
