It also wasn’t about ethnicity, but rather a meeting at the WH the judge attended.
Actually, I think everyone on this message board understands that this is exactly what he trying to do, and that this is what he is attempting to accomplish is obvious on the surface. However, unlike you, they realize that this is all a pack of lies that he is peddling, there is no reason be believe that Trump is in fact being treated unfairly, and that the way he is discrediting the judge is through a blatant appeal to racism.
You think if she was of Polish descent and attended an Iranian-Americans meeting she would have been given the same order? Let’s be real.
Ah yes, the crafty subtlety of the Trump dog whistle.
If Trump weren’t such a stupid ass, I’d almost believe he’s running for president as simply a means to politicize his Trump University lawsuit and get a new judge. I bet he cares more about winning that lawsuit than winning the Presidency.
They said she would only have to recuse herself if she went to the meeting, and she had been judging without any recusal order for several years before. So I don’t know, but maybe – the order itself (or how it was described) didn’t seem to say anything about ethnicity.
If they had some general order to all their judges to not attend any ethnocentric events (they might for all I know), I could buy that. Otherwise it quacks like a duck.
But they told her that if she didn’t go to the meeting, she wouldn’t have to recuse herself. That seems to be associating the meeting with the recusal, not her ethnicity.
Right, but the way I read that is that they won’t recuse if you just be American, the instant you publicly associate with other Iranian-Americans you’ll look biased. You honestly believe if she had gone to a Jewish, Polish, or Italian-American meeting she would have been ordered to recuse herself from cases involving those ethnicities?
I don’t know. But you’re reading into it – I’m just trying not too. You might be right, but if so, they deliberately framed it in a way to make it look like it was about the meeting, not her ethnicity.
Either way, I’m glad the ultimate ruling was in the judge’s favor. And Trump is still an idiot and said racist things about Judge Curiel.
This supports the theory I have that Trump is not only getting endorsements from people like Joe Arpaio but also that Trump is following their reprehensible behavior/advice.
Sheriff’s Joe tactic against the judge that is looking at his contempt of court regarding racial profiling has been that since the wife of the judge was investigated by Arpaio that the judge then has to recuse himself as there is a conflict of interest…
His complaint has gone nowhere because this abuse of power from the sheriff took place after the judge was appointed to his case. Yes, the most cynical explanation is that the sheriff attempted to create the conflict of interest himself and that is bound to go to the courts separately from all his contempt of court case, with him accused of that new abuse of power. Costing the state even more money.
As I said before, since Trump never repudiated sheriff Joe while that was/is going on then the old adage of “Show Me Your Friends, I’ll Tell You Who You Are” is more valid than ever.
Not about expecting judges and such like to be inhuman paragons of perfect impartiality. Myself, I’m a bit prejudiced against Latvians. Smelly, clannish and morbidly depressed. Estonians, Lithuanians, not great, but not Latvian, which they will be quick to tell you.
Were I a judge, I would not expect to expunge all such bias. I would expect to put a little extra thought into it, to say to myself, “Wait a tick, am I moving too easily to a conclusion because this guy’s name sounds Latvian? Perhaps I should review my thoughts on this, make sure everything adds up, or maybe consult a colleague who’s wisdom and probity I trust, get some feedback.”
That will do nicely, far as I am concerned. Let me stress that even though I am beady-eyed, shifty, and have distinctly vulpine features, I am not Latvian.

The Fraternal Order of Latvians is holding on Line 1 for you, elucidator.
Tough to buy that when the information released was the unedited ‘educational’ materials used in his so-called university.
I love arguments like “It’s okay to say hateful, racist things, so long as you intend to profit by it.”
Like S. Artist sez, Trump is playing us all like a harp. He’s just having a lot of trouble plucking the strings, because… you know.
His short [del]peni[/del] fingers?
In the About Fucking Time department, Obama says he’s had enough of Republicans obsessing over the term “radical Islam”.
