Donald Trumps Hillary. Reactions.

This is what I think happened (in part - there were many other contributory factors, of course).

I know these rural whites who swarmed up and elected him. I live with them. This is the narrative:

"This was a great country, the best! Hell, we saved the rest of the world’s bacon in two world wars! My granddaddy only had an 8th grade education, but he had a good job in the plant, and put food on his family’s table. My daddy dropped out of high school, but he had a good job at the plant and took care of us and kept us all in line.

"But then They closed the plant down, and sent our jobs to a lot of furriners. And then They let all the damn furriners in to take our jobs. And them furriners hate us, and want to kill us all. And now They wanna send even MORE of our jobs overseas, looks like to China or Japan. Hell, I thought we beat them fuckers in the war!

"All we wanted was for Them to open up a couple plants nearby so we could have a job and take care of our own. That’s all it woulda took. But the Democrats had to get all fancy-schmancy bout them gays and minorities, and told us we was stupid and hateful but didn’t tell us why. The Republicans was a little better, ‘cause at least they was Godly and didn’t hold with baby-killin’ and perverts. But when you get right down to it, all any of 'em really wanted to do was to line their own pockets, and raise my taxes and give it away to __________ who didn’t do a lick a work to get it.

"But Trump, now! There’s a man! He’s Godly - oh, he might cuss a little, and raise cain, but judge not lest ye be judged! He don’t need nobody’s money - he’s got his own. And he ain’t afraid to stand up and tell it like it is! This guv’ment ain’t done a damn thing for anybody, but he’s gonna set 'em all straight and get some work done! They call him all kinda names, but They do that to us, too.

“So screw the gov’ment! Donald Trump is wild, and free, and white…
…just like me.”
(Sorry; I literally do not know what I am typing, nor why I am typing it. I have long felt sorrow and pity at the plight of these people, whose tidy lives are being torn apart by global socio-political-economic-technological forces far beyond their ability to comprehend…but still…damn it all.)

21 January: Sadiq Khan makes a very public attempt to visit the US on holiday and is either:

A) refused entry for being Muslim, painting Der Bungle as the ignoramus he is.

B) allowed entry, painting Der Bungle as a hypocrite.

What criminal enterprise has she been working on for decades? Decades, plural, means more than one, so 20-30 years? If she was committing crimes for decades as part of a concerted effort, why were the emails from 6-7 years ago the biggest thing that seemed to dog her in terms of anything resembling criminal acts?

I just realized that Inauguration Day would have been my mom’s 88[sup]th[/sup] birthday. Heil Trump.

In retrospect Henry Clinton never should have been a candidate for the United States Presidents Day

Speaking as someone who was consistently wrong at every step of the election cycle, from “Trump won’t make it past the primaries” to “Trump won’t win the election”, I will confidently predict that whatever I predict next will be wrong too. Including this.

This, OTOH, is right on the money, and thank you for it, astro.

Regards,
Shodan

I am devastated, and my confidence in my predictive abilities for politics are shot to hell. I hope I’m wrong about Trump, and I hope I’m wrong about some of his supporters. I offer this plea to Trump supporters and conservatives in general in GD – please be alert for this dark element among Trump’s supporters. I hope I’m wrong and they’re not a significant force.

Hillary was better qualified in every way to be President. Except for lacking a Y-chromosome.

I didn’t like either one of the candidates. But I assumed that Hillary would eke out a win, somehow; I guess I was wrong. The only real winners here are America’s comedians.

Sorry posting from my tablet is difficult. In retrospect Hillary Clinton really didn’t have the charisma or likability required to make a strong candidate. Her machine had enough horsepower to let her triumph in the primaries but her baggage was immense. And I really didn’t know how immense until the results last night. She didn’t really emotionally connect to a lot of Voters. Personally she left me cold and I consider myself a moderately Progressive voter. I have voted Democratic in all elections except two since the age of 18. On the other hand Trump was an insane shitshow. To have have lost to him is astounding.

The worst part of all this is that the awful GOP maneuvering to hold up the Supreme Court nomination now seems like genius. This incredibly shitty behavior is being rewarded handsomely.

If it had swung the other way, I’m wondering if Trump would have conceded. Maybe not?

This election should be no surprise for most people who actually follow politics and don’t let their personal bias get in the way.

This election wasn’t won or lost based upon character, racist attitudes, e-mails, national security, gender issues, foreign policy, etc.

It’s the economy stupid…as quoted by James Carville in 1992.

Trump was able to swing enough traditional democrats and independents who have seen their quality of life for themselves and their families deteriorate since the turn of the millennium. The political elite in both parties and the media missed how strong these economic issues are to enough people, who will overlook other issues that I described above.

Most people vote based upon how their bank accounts are doing. It’s a basic emotion and has been tried and true for years in presidential elections.

I voted for Gary Johnson as a protest vote against Hillary and Trump. But I’m not one bit surprised by the results. One mark was the turn-outs at Trump rallies, wherever he had them, vs. Hillary in the same locations.

This is far from the first time I’ve underestimated the gullibility of the American voter. If I live long enough, it probably won’t be the last. But I will be surprised if he lasts out his first term, as I think there are enough real scandals lurking in his history that an impeachment seems almost inevitable. Not that President Pence should be celebrated, either. My niece with the transplanted heart is really freaking out about how she’s going to stay alive, now. If the pre-existing condition makes a comeback in health insurance, we’re screwed.

Wouldn’t that depend on whether the new President has the time or the proxies to be suing them every time they open their mouths?

Yes. But I am better qualified to be President and I am not even American. Saying you are better qualified than Trump is not a thumping endorsement.

That’s what my wife is saying.

I think that’s sexist twaddle. Apparently many women voted for Trump.

Ah, what does she know?

(Just trying to blend into the New America, Pres. Trump. Please don’t jail me, sir)

Am I the only one holding out cautious optimism that he might turn out to be a very good centrist president? He’s palled around with all kinds of diverse people in his life and, say what you will, but he’s got a great deal of emotional intelligence and he’s no religious fanatic.

Remember, George W. Bush ran as a uniting moderate but soon turned into a partisan moron. This guy might be the exact opposite.

Right now, I’m contemplating the likely fact than in a couple of years, my sister, who has Stage 4 cancer in breast and lung, will die in poverty because her ACA-mandated health insurance will be yanked out from under her. But hey, I’m a member of a protected class in Trump’s America (middle-aged white guys with good jobs), and America will be Great Again, so there’s that.
