The House of Reps in the Land of Dubya has passed a bill banning gays from being foster parents. I particularly love this comment by the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Robert Talton:

Whether this will be passed into law or not is unknown as a few Texas senators have with whatever pollster angels they yet doth serve shied away from it, but I’ve faith that the state that began when a church was militarized to defend the right to steal land, break treaties and own slaves and where Special Olympics medals can be found in death cells will find enough moral righteousness to pass it.
God I fucking hate Paul Cameron , almost enough to violate the “don’t wish death” commandment on these boards. Listening to the talking brainless heads defending this act on CNN, Fox News, etc., it is so clear that the justification for this is based in his research: claims that “gays are 11 times more likely to sexually abuse children” (actually stated- without cite of course- on a CNN interview- kudos to Jon Stewart for doing what the CNN moderator should have done) or that homosexuality is learned or that gays choose parentage in order to recruit, etc., always lead back to his “Howthefuckmanytimesdoeshehavetobediscreditedasapartisanhackmadmanofnomerit* whatsoeverwhoseresearchintegritywouldraisethelastremainingeyebrowhairsontherottedcorpse

The man has been forbidden to practice psychology by the APA, has been exposed as a liar and a perjurer numerous times, and produces “findings” that nobody else, not even the most rabid right wing child psychologist, can seem to duplicate and every credible and objective study seems to completely and thoroughly refute, yet he’s still used to fuck with gay families in courts and legislatures across the nation. When I think about the thousands of kids in Texas who may well soon be returned to “the system”, taken from actual houses and families and put into institutions, because of this man and the pandering pusbags who parrot him I want to puke.

A CNN interviewer (not sure which one as I only watch the news blips on that channel, but we’ll call her I-1) is interviewing a Cardboard CutOut Fundie proponent of the bill (we’ll call her F) and a Cardboard CutOut Gay opponent of the bill (we’ll call him G).
F: (again, paraphrased) "…it is a documented fact that gays are eleven times more likely to sexually molest a child in their care than straight people are. They should not be foster parents!
G: That is a completely bogus claim that is not true and can be contradicted by many different studies.
Cut to Jon Stewart (audience already groaning): He is correct, of course. Her comment is based on a very biased completely specious report that was conducted using an Internet search and highly questionable methodology, which of course the Interviewer pointed out.

Cut to Jon Stewart (audience groaning more) Of course her co-host at least stepped in and corrected the libel.

On a different subject, please let me add the following: I am completely aware that there are millions of forward thinking, progressive individuals in Texas who are sickened by this and there are many I am sure who may have personal prejudices against gays but are at least not impervious to logic or prey to ideologue rants. (I’m from Alabama, where the many intelligent and thoughtful people are never shown on news but the Bible thumping mouthbreathers who want to stop just short of allowing spectral evidence in the courthouse are weekly news fixtures.) The rant applies to those who aren’t progressive, are prone to believe any libel that suits their purposes without need of further investigation and who can unfortunately swing elections and votes on major issues of policy.
You know, using faux pas makes you less than perfectly straight. In fact, I believe it disqualifies you not only from foster parenting in Texas, but also from handling money, or breathing air.

My godfather was a wonderful gay man who would have had custody of me and my brother if anything happened to my parents. We spent tons of time with him growing up, and one of my favorite memories was a large family ski trip we took where he brought his longtime partner, and they spent hours watching TV with me because they liked the same shows I did (no one else in the family liked the artsy stuff). Funny, I’m a heterosexual married female. Doesn’t look like all that time he spent with me or my brother ‘warped’ us.
He died in 1992. I still miss him, dammit. And those fuckers in Texas can take their fucking prejudice and shove it up their ass because some of us would have been raised happily by our gay guardians - and we would have turned out better than any of those assholes voting for this law.
I’ll speak for all Texans on this one when we say Fuck you too. I was with ya right up to the point where you pit the whole state for something an INDIVIDUAL did in the state. Granted people may have voted for the guy, others did not.

You gotta admit, though, that when one hears about batshit insane right-wing hate mongering, one’s mind immediately thinks “Texas.” And except for the few times when it turns out to be Florida, it usually turns out to be Texas.
I’m sure it’s a great state, with lots to offer, but there’s a reason people tend to pick on it. And that reason would be the all of the batshit insane right-wing hate mongering.
Given the fact that is GWB’s home state, I can understand the bat-shit insane bullshit that comes out of it. I also understand the insane same bat-shit that is hurled at it.
What I fail to realize is why it is so hard to distinguish people from places, policy from the entire state. I don’t remember which State but Texas sure as hell isn’t the first to pass this VERY SAME LAW. Pit those fuckers for once.
