DON'T Stump the Teenage Girl with Not-So-Average Knowledge

That hasn’t been an easy question since 2006.

  1. California? …Or maybe Florida? …Texas?

  2. Alaska??

  3. 3 or 4, I think!

  1. Montgomery?
  2. I am not sure… I can’t remember.
  3. 17th?
  4. Oxygen and Carbon??
  5. i’m not sure the exact country, but it’s somewhere in India.
  6. Trivial Pursuit? Maybe.

Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Beaker, was it like… Dr. Egghead? Or whoever Beaker was paired with. And Fozzy.

  1. He accidentally wished that he wasn’t so hungry, and got a sandwich.

  2. Purin! (Silly, that’s in my name, and one of the reasons why it’s there!)

  3. Fionna!

  4. (Sure, why not) Regular Show is the show, and Mordecai is a blue jay? and Rigby is a Raccoon I think.

  5. Tree Trunks!

  6. Actually, you got me here! I don’t know.

  1. …Henry Ford! …Or maybe not.

True or False: Stephen Colbert (of the Comedy Central Show The Colbert Report) hates bears.

  1.

  2. Song of Myself was written by Walt Whitman. Here is a tiny snippet from the poem that I like: “And to glance with an eye or show a bean in its pod confounds the learning of all times” I’m sure you could’ve quoted something. You wrote a quick haiku earlier, and song lyrics count if they’re moderately good (or if you make a case they are :dubious: ). I think you were underestimating yourself.

  3. “i before e except after c”. How odd that you know an exception to the rule! Again though, you doubted yourself: you knew there was a very common example of an exception to the rule, yet you thought it would be a good rule if only you knew what it was. In fact, there are many more exceptions and the rule is a load of tosh! Good on ya for not knowing, your spelling is pretty good without it. I grant half a point for knowing the exception!

  4. It is indeed a literary genre (also sometimes film), where magic is a regular part of the real world, in a sort of boring way. Not as flashy and obvious as Harry Potter, more like “lalala… she levitated as she poured her tea…yada yada yada”. Half a point for correctly deducing what it might be.

  5.

I award myself 2.5/5 points. Huzzah!

  1. Wasn’t that hilarious?
  2. I was hoping to be a bit silly, but you did say to not stump you with not-so-average knowledge, and I think Jigglypuff’s japanese name is not-so-average!
  3. Fionna was awesome but I think Jake > Cake
  4. WOooooOOOoaaaahhh!!!
  5. Isn’t she the sweetest?
  6. Spirited Away won in 2002, and is the only Miyazaki film to win best animated oscar.
  7. Yakitate! Japan!! is an anime about a boy (Azuma Kazuma) who is on a quest to create a bread that will define Japan. As an avid anime fan I highly recommend this to you!!! It’s the best!
  1. Can BMO play video tapes? If so, where do they go?

  2. Who does Muscle Man love to tell jokes about?

  3. If I were an electric/ground type pokemon, which pokemon could I be?

  4. What would be a super effective attack against me if I were an electric/ground type pokemon? (one point for me for every super effective attack you can name)

  5. Name a character who has summoned a Spirit Bomb at least once in their life.

  1. Good!
  2. Pointillism
  3. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
  4. Betamax (before your time, I know).
  5. I figured that you’d at least get SDMB! Shame on you and your house!
  6. Something is a pandemic when it’s extraordinarily widespread, not necessarily spreading quickly. Learn your roots: pan + demos.
6a) WHO = The World Health Organization
6b) The board game wherein players cooperate to eradicate a pandemic is called… Pandemic.

Oh sure, butter her up with Adventure Time trivia.

The answer to my question, which was made into a classic movie in the 50s (and I tried to get you to watch the Tom Cruise/Spielberg version with me… I told you you’d regret not watching it with me! Mwahahaha!) is:

The War of the Worlds

Oh MAN, I read the Jake thing wrong! If I hadn’t have read it wrong, I would have certainly gotten Cake.

I also forgot that question about Spirited Away. sighs. I wouldn’t have gotten that one! Man!

Oh, and, WooooOOOOaaaaHHHhhhh!!
High five, your questions are awesome. Highest of fives!

  1. Yep; they go in his ass! :stuck_out_tongue:

  2. …HIS MOOOMMM!

  3. Oh, man! I gotta think about this one… Isn’t Stunfisk (a super lame Pokemon IMO… Probably just because of how weird it looks) an electric/ground type? Damn, that was a good one!

  4. Oh, now you got me. Damn it! Moves and effectiveness are my weakness! Lessee… Maybe a grass type move? …Or fire? I’ll go ahead and put one move for both… so probably Flamethrower for fire and Magical Leaf for grass…?

  5. I haven’t watched much Dragon Ball at all, but isn’t that Vegeta? Or Goku? I think it was Goku. Didn’t they think he died or something after he did so? But he was like… ‘nah bitches’

Huzzah! I totally approve of the points, haha! I can’t help but doubt myself sometimes. Woah, I can’t believe it’s actually a piece of shit rule! It sounds pretty solid.

And I didn’t know I could put song lyrics! I can do that, easy! If song lyrics count, I know a shitload of poetry!

Oh, I think that’s true…? I watch him all the time, he’s a genius! But i’m usually half asleep when I do because his show’s on late.

I made the anime question a bit too hard I think, now that I think about the phrasing of the question. The most popular anime in 1995/1996 was Neon Genesis Evangelion. You almost got my other one…the household disinfectant was hydrogen peroxide! Like I said, they don’t recommend it anymore so don’t go pouring it on your wounds.

Since I know you like anime and everyone else is doing a darn good job making lots of political and geographical questions, here’s some more I think you can get!

1.Naruto is the name of a guy in a popular anime named after him. His name can also be interpreted as a noun in Japanese. What does the word naruto describe?

2.When this anime franchise was brought to the United States, they renamed it Robotech. Was was the original Japanese name for this franchise?

3.Stars come in several classifications in reference to their size and/or color. Name at least 3 of them.

4.There is a type of star that rotates very quickly and emits a radiation beam out of its core. What is the name of this type of star?

5.Name at least 3 prefixes. Bonus points if you can describe how they modify the words they are attached to.

6.Johnny Yong Bosch voices so many main characters in dubs for anime and video games that it gets downright annoying hearing him yet again. Name as many roles as you can that he has voiced.

7.This japanese-korean voice actress is famous for her deep preteen and teenage boy voices for characters such as Edward Elric and Tao Ren. Who is she?

WHY did I not get SDMB?!
My brain is so overloaded with questions, hah! Plus I still gotta get used to that, since I thought the abbreviation would be TSD for “The Straight Dope” but now I see… It’s “Straight Dope Message Boards” Fffffuck.

And I hate you for that board game one!! I should have known, since I played Pandemic 2 on my fucking computer!!

Oh sure, blame it on me not watching it with you… You would have asked a different question that I didn’t know the answer to if I did! :stuck_out_tongue:

I said a last name would be good enough. It’s William Clay Ford, Jr., Henry’s great-grandson. So, you had it right with “Ford”.

Speaking of Ford, it, General Motors, and Chrysler, the so-called “Big Three” U.S. auto makers, are associated with which American city?

Awesome! I’m in a deep hole now!

  1. Sorry, it’s a novel, a film and a musical, but not an opera. Famous operas include Barber of Seville, The Valkyrie, Carmen, La Boheme, and Madame Butterfly.

  2. Frank Lloyd Wright is the one that springs to everyone’s mind. “Poo” is close to “Pei”, I suppose.

  3. I’ll accept this. Cayenne pepper (with a k sound). Cyan (with an s sound) is a greenish-blue color.

  4. Descartes, Locke, Rousseau, Nietzsche, Augustine, Hume…

  5. Correct!

  6. Puerto Rico is actually a territory of the US. Haiti and the Dominican Republic are the other large ones, with a whole bunch of smaller ones in the Lesser Antilles.

  7. Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Zeppo, Gummo.

  8. While I’m surprised you know of Sealand, I’m not sure that I can accept a fort as an island.

  9. Correct!

  10. State, Treasury, Defense, Interior, Education, Energy, Homeland Security…

So -8 for me.

Round 2:

  • What does the fox say?

  • Rebecca Black has a sequel to her song “Friday”. What is it called?

  • What is the name of the sash on a kimono?

  • The Legend of Zelda video games feature a guy in green as the protagonist. What is his name?

  • What gas causes balloons to float?

  • What civilization used hieroglyphics as a writing system?

  • Name three web browsers.

  • You are surely familiar with the company Google. What is a googol?

  • When Facebook first launched, accounts were not available to everyone, but rather a smaller subset of the population. Who could have a Facebook account?

  • What are emoji?

  • Name five Native American tribes.

Pop Culture:

  1. What species of dinosaur is the first to attack in the film Jurassic Park?

  2. What. Makes. Time. Travel. Possible?!

  3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of the most celebrated comedies in film of all time among geeks and inifinity quotable. But what were they seeking in the film?

  4. What color shirt does Spock wear? (Bonus 1. Name all three colored shirts used in Star Fleet. Bonus 2. Name what class the colors represent aboard the ship.)

  5. What does the fox say?
ETA: I swear question 5 was a coincidence. But now you can choose 2 noises from multiple correct answers!

I literally HATE myself for not getting Evangelion, because my friend just watched it. :smack:

And yeah! My mom used to clean my ears with that. It’s kinda gross.

  1. I’ve heard of Naruto, but i’ve never seen it! It shouldn’t mean ninja, since isn’t that shinobi? It’s probably something related to that.

  2. Aw, shit, you got me here. I have no idea!

  3. Red giant? Or something like that? That’s all I can think of.

  4. No clue.

  5. There’s de- … Like declassified and derailed? If that’s what you mean by prefix. There’s re- like reevaluated and reassigned? I can’t think of any others without just listing words that start with one letter. These might not even be correct. :dubious:

  6. Actually, the only one I can think of is that he did that one guy from Bleach. I’ve never even watched it, but it’s on my list of to-watch for sure.

  7. I don’t know! I haven’t watched too much anime, at least not anything too obscure, but i’m getting there!

You are getting almost all my questions correct. On the moves question, grass would be super effective but not fire. Otherwise, you got 'em all.

I love that you know/get the Regular Show and Adventure Time references. That’s way more important and interesting than knowing that senators are elected for 6 years at a time or that Biden is the Vice President  Although, you should still know them :stuck_out_tongue:

Another point for you! Stephen commonly refers to bears as “godless killing machines”.

  1. Oh god… Ahem… Ring ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding! A-ring-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-!

  2. It’s Saturday or something like that.

  3. Zelda. NO. I’M KIDDING. It’s Link of course.

  4. Helium!

  5. Egyptians.

  6. Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox.

  7. A googol is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000… onwards until there are 100 zeros! (Finally I can use this knowledge! YES!)

  8. I am actually unsure!

  9. Aren’t those japanese emoticons? like… ノ’///д///'ノ … Wow i’m not good at those!

  10. I can’t answer this, either!

Detroit? I’m not sure, even though I lived in Detroit.

  1. …I hate you.

  2. The Flux Capacitor!

  3. …The Holy Grail?

  4. Blue! …And the three colored shirts are blue, yellow, and red. I’m not sure what they all mean, but if I were to guess, blue probably means a captain, or some thing like that, red means an operator, and yellow is like… special forces? I don’t even know.

  5. No.

  1. A naruto is a type of fishcake with a spiral pattern. Naruto the guy has a spiral on his stomach and that’s why the author named him that.
2.The original series name was Macross, or full name “The Super Dimension Fortress Macross”
  2. Red giant is correct! Some other star types are white dwarf, brown dwarf, and blue supergiant.
  3. It’s called a pulsar. Science discovered a lot using these stars, and some are almost as accurate as atomic clocks in their rotation! Super cool.
5.You did get two with De- and Re-. Prefix itself has one - “pre”. “De” for instance means something akin to “opposite/negative”, “re” means something like “again” and so on. Other prefix examples are “sub”, “macro”, “micro”, “poly”, “semi” and “mono” to name a few. I had to learn prefixes and what they meant really early and they helped a TON in understanding new words I hadn’t heard of. I recommend them!
  4. This one was kinda hard. But once you learn his voice you may become just as annoyed as I at how many lead roles he’s given. All these heroes sound the same! You did get it right with Ichigo, the lead dude of Bleach
  5. Romi Paku (though I think her official spelling is Romi Park).

Oh man, you can award yourself half a point for that… Since I was a dummy by even mentioning fire… I kicked myself when I thought about fire and ground types.

Yeah, I know right? I was waiting for more fun questions that I actually had a chance to answer! Ask me more if you would like!
