Sheesh, some Austrians just can’t take a joke…and his rhetoric is getting positively Bushesque.

Hey, can we get everyone in France and/or Germany in 1040? You’re up to five out seven, but there’s still room in France…I’m sure you could squeeze a Turkish fleet into that space in Gascony, and maybe an Austrian army in Picardy.

Actually, maybe I shouldn’t be giving Austria ideas. Never mind, carry on.

Contiguous empires are over-rated.

Hello chaps. I’m back. Now, what’s been happening? (Quickly flicks through maps to bring himself up to date. There are mutterings, the occasional expletive and raucous laughter when Russia’s final position is noted.)

The Austro-Italian juggernaut rolls on. (Un)willing sacrifices are thrown beneath the wheels of the monster. Can the rest of Europe organise itself to form a viable opposition? Probably not. I forecast a rapid change of supply centre ownership in and around Germany, but as to who owns what at the end of the move, I wouldn’t hazard a guess. Germany may disappear entirely. Russia is, er, sorry, can’t concentrate… (wipes tears from eyes)

England (Weirddave): At last! The cockpit of Europe is in (for England) safe hands. No longer does the threat of invasion from Belgium loom. Unfortunately, the French are already in London.

France (Omniscient): The desperate struggle continues. While holding the Germans and English relatively successfully (ok, I was being generous about “holding”), the Italians are stomping all over you. Possession any of the following would be to your advantage:

  1. Allies
  2. Plans
  3. Supply centres in France that you can build in

Apart from the lack of all of the above, you’re doing fine.

Germany (White Lightning): Scene – Kiel, the Rathaus. The army’s chief of staff, von Schlieffen, is reporting to Kaiser Wilhem II.
Kaiser Bill: “Vell von Schlieffen, how goes ze var.”
Von Schlieffen: “Zere ist some gut news und some bad news, your Kaisership.”
Kaiser Bill: “Just for a change, start mit ze bad news.”
Von Schlieffen: “Ze Russians are in Berlin. Ze French are in Munich und Holland. Ze English are in Belgium.”
Kaiser Bill: “Und ze gut news?”
Von Schlieffen: “I haven’t finished ze bad news yet. Ze Russians are poised to take Denmark. Ze French are poised to take Paris. Ve will haf to defend everywhere and cannot advance. Even zen, ve vill lose bases.”
Kaiser Bill: “Und ze gut news?”
Von Schlieffen (notices interesting pattern on carpet and shuffles feet guiltily): “Zere is no gut news. I vas joking.”
::: ducks & runs:::

Italy (Jonathan Chance): Life as the junior partner to Austria is good. Oh, sorry. Didn’t you know you are the junior partner? You mean the Austrians keep telling you how wonderful you are and how important you are to the great project of unifying Europe in a common political and economic system. I bet you were told that the lire will be the common currency of the new union. I’m sure it leaves you with a warm glow. But… the Habsburgs are stomping all over Russia and Turkey, collecting bases faster than they can build units, while you struggle against France, unable to exploit your numerical superiority without leaving the Venice open to the inevitable Austrian stab. And we all know the Austrians like to stab. Ask the Russians. I see you’ve moved a fleet to Apulia, just in case. Now is a good time to open informal, off the record, exploratory, talks about talks with the Russians and Turks.

Austria (Abe Babe): The Austrian armies sweep across the North and East, crushing all in their path. Moscow, St Petersburg, Ankara, Munich, Venice – all lie open. Venice? Doesn’t that lie to the west and belong to your ally? Well yes, but it is tempting and vulnerable. My grand pan would be: A (Moscow) to St Petersburg, collect Moscow on the way back; A (Rumania) to Sevastopol to bounce out the Turks; A (Armenia) to Ankara, 50-50 chance of getting it; F (Greece) to Aegean; A (Bulgaria) to Constantinople, it may succeed if Turkey cocks things up, A (Tyrol) to Munich supported by A (Silesia); A (Trieste) to Venice supported by F (Adriatic). Three supply centres, three builds. Game (almost) over. Easy isn’t it?

Russia (Maeglin): Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Even as your forces sweep west, Mother Russia herself is cruelly ravaged by the Austrian bayonet. Where is the mighty Russian bear when he is needed? In the fleshpots of Oslo, that’s where.

Turkey (ShibbOleth): Excerpt from “Ask uncle Klemens”, an agony aunt(?) column ghost written by the late Prince Klemens von Metternich.
Ali Pasha, vizier to the Ottoman Empire: “Dear uncle Klemens. My ex-bestest friend has got me surrounded and wants to take away my toys. My new bestest friend won’t let me play with his, he likes playing with other people better. What should I do?”
Uncle Klemens: “Dear Ali. I refer you to my previous answer: Surrender. Next!”

Ireland: Beautiful weather. Great scenery, eating, walking and cycling. Dreadful roads. The Aliens will return.

Go Alien – Strategic sarcasm a speciality.

That statement could also be about Los Angeles.

When we went to Ireland, I was one of the two who could drive manual transmission, so I got to drive the mini-bus (seating for 11). THAT was fun.

In Italy, on the other hand, I got to drive one of the Alfa Romeo rentals. That WAS fun. Ahhh. Italy, such a beautiful land. I must get back there again. Soon.

I can play toppers there. I had to drive the minibus in LA a few years ago.

I’ll take Ireland any day.

See, I told you he was going to stab Italy.

Who me? I wasn’t even there. You can’t prove it was me. Nobody saw me. I was there to get medicine for my sick mother. Plus I was buying toys for orphans at the time. I was too drunk to do anything like that. It’s a Republican conspiracy.

It depends on what your definition of “was” is.

sniffle

No one wants to be my friend.

[sub]I told you attacking me was a bad idea in the end.[/sub]

No one wants to be your friend? I’ve been feeling like an appetizer throughout this whole game. At least you’re a main course.

Nobody in this game is losing friends faster than me.

Both of my email addresses have been malfunctioning, and I have been up to my ears in RL issues since the middle of September. So I have not actually been ignoring anyone purposefully.

But even if my email addresses were working properly, I probably would have ignored you anyway.

I didn’t want to ask to be replaced, as I felt that would have been a greater disruption to the game overall. But if you guys want a more responsive player for Russia at this time and can field another candidate, I would be happy to withdraw if popular demand wills it.

Maeglin, I think I will try to find a new Russian player to take your place. Any of our spectators interested? Go alien? Math Geek? Bueller?

Meanwhile, we have a motion on the floor (again) to declare a win for Austria, which would potentially render moot the need for a replacement. But it needs to be unanimous. Votes are due by 5pm tomorrow.

Hey guys. Starting tomorrow I’m going to be out of town till next weekend (going to see my girlfriend!), so I won’t be maintaining my usual 24/7 availability. So if anyone has anything to tell me, tell it to me at inthetank2001@yahoo.com, which I’ll be checking once a day or thereabouts.

I’m emailing this notice too, but I’ve had trouble reaching people that way before, so I wanted to be sure nobody was confused about how to get in touch with me this week.

This goes for both 1040 and 1046, obviously. Thanks.

He’s coming up for air once a day?

Must not have been a long seperation.

RTFirefly, thanks for the offer but work has just started to build up, meaning I will be a very intermittent viewer. Then I have three weeks holiday in California so I would end up defaulting if Russia survives much beyond October.

And for those following game 1035 I have a sad announcement.

Our crazy, creative friend Austria has bowed out of the game and been replaced. Will his successor carry on his tradition?

Only time will tell.

Almost a month, JC. She’s got classes to go to and crap like that, so I’ll have a little bit of time on my hands.

Just checking in to confirm that there’s no adjudication in 1046. I’m heading out now, can’t say when I’ll be checking in to have a look… So if you happen to be frantically trying to get in touch with me about that turn, just know that I’m not deliberately ignoring you. Not that I expect anything like that to be going on this turn…

For Dip 1040, KidCharlemagne had said on the last page he was interested in getting his toes wet. Not the best of positions, but at least he(?) could get a feel for the game and not feel bad about the outcome. He may not be checking in here all the time so it would probably be best to send an e-mail. Failing that, and assuming that we’re still playing in that game, I could see if my friend I’d mentioned before would mind to jump in.

For Dip 1046, moves are due in about 45 minutes, correct? Just want to make sure my plan for eliminating the German language from the Continent is proceeding forward. Now the only question is what to replace it with? Russian is probably not a good way to go in the long run, and Turkish words are way to long. French has a nice ring but there’s the problem with the waiters. Ditto English and the food. Perhaps Italian…
