Doper Diplomacy - Fall and Winter 2002

Nah, that’s not Penelope Cruz’s skirt, it’s mine goddamnit.

Why the hell does everyone always hate the French? Feisty sons of bitches. Oh, and Abe Babe, Maegelin, have I mentioned how tasty bratwurst and beer are together? Wait…no, no, no…don’t go to Green Bay!

Well, Abe Babe, if you’re not big on processed meats, there’s always pasta and tiramisu. And don’t you even think about pretending that I mean Chicago.

Just remember, nobody really likes Turkish food, it’s just a poor imitation of Greek. And did I mention that the women are brutes. Yep, no reason to come down here at all. The weather’s not even so agreeable and the taxis will just rip you off.

I have a hunch that they are!

By sheer luck I started a game of Axis and Allies with my RPG group. I’m certainly not winning, but I’m not losing, either, which is good for my first game. I’ve also been doing some analysis of the Diplomacy map.

What I’m saying is that I want to sign up as cannon fodder for the next Doper Diplomacy game.

I could even play like a turkey, or is it play Turkey? I get them confused. Sorry, I just want to fit in with the Turky bashers.

Turkey, did you think the Greek fleet was going to move, or were you just trying to hold the Aegean? Why was Aeg worth more than Bul and the associated base? Just trying to understand some game theory.

Because mine worked, big boy.

Hey, man, I did my part. Why haven’t you emailed me?

Nobody told me about any plan to invade Germany.

They belong with other German-speaking people, and will be accepted as demi-citizens of the Austro-Hungarian Hegemo-errrrr, Empire, with most of the rights appurtenant thereto.

Oh please, after what you tried to do to me last turn, you are saying that I should have trusted you in retrospect?

Have no fear Omni, I’ll be bringing some of that tasty bier with me to cook my French Fries in. Escargotwurst, hmm…

Don’t worry, I’ll be an enlightened Kaiser and leave some of your non-military buildings standing when I sack Paris…
All the rest of you can keep your hands to yourself. Munich is no flophouse, I’ll have you know.

Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask, does every turn have to take so long? Almost a week for a Fall turn seems quite long to me. Would it be out of line to suggest that maybe we could do Fall 03 Friday, do the Winter over the weekend, and then adopt a Tuesday/Thursday/Friday pattern?

I know that my bummy lifestyle probably allows more time for the Dip than you guys have available, but now that we’re into 1903 things should get going a little more rapidly, no?

One of our group is planning to be away for the next several days. I have arranged the deadline dates to aviod conflicting with his vacation.

After that, I am willing to go to a year-per-week schedule, if that’s what people want: I figure that as we progress, the amount of diplomacy in the typical move will decrease. Extensions can be granted when necessary.

But one word of caution: a year-per-week schedule means deadlines only two working days apart, and retreats will cut that to about a day and a half. This can only work if everybody has reasonably glitch-free email accounts, and two or three of our group have had some problems with that so far this game. Given that free email accounts are still easy to come by, I recommend that everyone have a backup email address, in case their main email provider gets buggy.

Actually, in good ol’ 983 I found that I needed more time for the later turns than the earlier ones. Once you (and your enemies) get up to, oh, say, six or seven units the number of combinations of moves you have to think about on a give turn really skyrockets. And the amount of e-mail flying around doesn’t decrease.

Of course, I obsess about these things and spend hours poring over lists of moves and countermoves trying to find optimal strategies when I should be grading homeworks, so maybe I just need more time than most.

Speaking of which, I will be gone from Fri-Sun of this week. Totally incommunicado.

Just stay away from Ocean City, you Russian bear! That’s MY turf this weekend.

Turkey is good and bad for a noob. It is tough to take out early, but it doesn’t really capture the flavor of the game. It’s just wrong for a country to have only two enemies at the start of the game.

My guess is that he thought I might move into the Ionian as a prelude for an attack on Italy (I almost did). It was a pretty decent gamble.

Don’t forget - Spring 1903 moves are due at 5am EDT!

Aw, he’s growing up just like ME!

sniff

I’m so proud!

Can I request, like, a 1-year extension on this turn?

Tactically at least, I have to say this is definitely the most interesting turn of Dip I’ve ever been a part of.

And I’m even gainfully employed. Doesn’t it just make your heart burst with pride?

Hmmm, an extension measured in Dip years. Does that mean you just don’t file any move orders until Spring 1904? France will be so thankful!

It is pretty interesting, isn’t it? I’m having a fun time watching the action.

Would a delay until tomorrow afternoon be possible?
