None of these really bug me and I too like the zombie comments because I don’t always notice it’s a zombie thread. Once in a while it’s a Perfect Zombie, like a zombie thread about zombies, and you just can’t let that go.

The squid dates from a time of shared fiction between quite a few Dopers. I remember those threads quite fondly. But I’ve generally backed off with it; I tend to welcome new Dopers with home-made ice cream these days.

Technically speaking, languages are memes. Everything is a meme, so you can’t stop using them.

People know when they are doing it because they do it on purpose.
I never considered memes to be intended to be funny. It’s that group cohesiveness thing. If you understand where the meme came from, you are part of the group. If not, you aren’t.
If it didn’t’ happen on this board, I’d think of it as a sign that it isn’t actually a community.
