Doper Poets - come participate in the SDMB Poetry Sweatshop!!

He did.

. . .I said that I was game. Count me in, too!

**Angel of the Lord **- my apologies! Please do not smite me; of course you are in, as are -

along with the earlier ‘complete’ list in post #25.

I’d like to do this, too. I don’t know if I’ll be around the computer at the right time, but I’ll give it a shot.

Right - so, unless anyone has a strenuous objection, we will start the SDMB Poetry Sweatshop on this Sunday, October 18th at 1 PM EDT.

I will post three randomly selected words in this thread and in a new thread which will be entitled “The SDMB Poetry Sweatshop Anthology”. All interested poets will have one hour to compose a poem, any style, any form, any length but the poem MUST encorporate the three words.

Participating poets will have until 2 PM EDT to submit their poems to the anthology, at which point I will start another thread listing all the poets and poems in a poll. I’ll leave the poll open for a couple of days, and at the end of the poll, we will have selected a favourite.

The favourite poet will enjoy the use of the title ‘Poet Laureate of the SDMB’ until the rest of us get sick of hearing it and pit the bastard.

Some side points -

Yes, this will be an internet ‘live’ contest - that will help keep everybody honest in terms of only taking an hour (or less) to write. The idea comes out of the ‘Long Weekend Novel’ and ‘Poetry Sweatshop’ competitions that used to run here in Toronto, where the works were created ‘live’ in a bar, or under some sort of supervision.

lissener I was trying for earlier afternoon EDT because then Half Man Half Wit (in Germany) would still be able to participate. Does 1 PM EDT absolutely not work out for you? Please let me know…

Elendil’s Heir I’m not that fussed about editing, as we will all have only the five minute window, and I know for myself I often need that edit window to catch some of my appalling spelling mistakes.

I would be happy to participate myself, and I give my word of honour that I will not draw the three words until the appointed time. If anyone feels that is unfair, or does not trust me, I am willing to withdraw. (That being said, I want to be honest if only because if I cheated and lost, the humiliation would be unbearable!)

Any other questions, I’m around and avoiding doing my taxes - I’d be much happier being online at the SDMB than getting into Quicken…

Best wishes,

Le Ministre de l’au-delà

Seeing this for the first time - If it’s not too late to jump in, I’d like to play.

Absolutely!

Til Sunday…

Le Ministre de l’au-dela: I am going to have to withdraw from the competition. Some things have come up. Thanks.

I’ll bite.

I want in.

Sorry to hear that. Hope the things that have come up settle themselves painlessly.

Frylock, Maserschmidt - welcome aboard! See you Sunday.

What joy! Best of luck to you! 26 poets and counting.

I’ve no idea why I keep missing individual names…

Would like to take part if I am around.

I agree it is more interesting if we all have the same words to work with.

I want in, but I’m working this weekend. Would it be possible for me to get my hour while I’m between jobs today (between 1:30 and 3:30) or before work tomorrow (between 8 and 9)? I love to write and totally want to get in on this!

I’d like to try!

I’ll give it a try

All right -
AppallingGael
RedWood
Smorfie

are on the list, too!
Serenata67 I’m sorry, I’ve been agonizing about this for much of the day. I think it would be more fair if we keep it to the 1 PM EDT to 2 PM EDT timeframe, partly because some people may well have changed their schedules around to be able to participate.

Til tomorrow, everyone!

Minister, by my count that makes a total of three (3) separate threads devoted to a single one-hour poetry sweatshop contest, which seems like overkill. Is there any reason why you can’t just have the whole thing taking place in this original thread?

Furthermore, if it’s a live-post event where all participants are using the same three words and everybody can see them when they’re posted and everybody can post to the thread, then why keep a special list of pre-registered participants? Just post the three words at 1 PM EDT and let a hundred poetic flowers bloom (or however many Dopers manage to create and post a poem in the subsequent hour).

Anyway, great idea for a contest and I look forward to reading the entries.

Wow, why am I just hearing about this now? Cool idea.

I second this. Keeps it open and simple. Gives a bit of flexibility too - people like me who are a bit slow still have the chance to play (but only if I am awake at that time… damn… I wont officially sign up, but I might still have a crack at it).
