Doper Social Groups! (New feature)

:smack: I was whooshed, never mind my post.

I can see the groups, but I can’t figure out how to join one. Has that been disabled?

Thay have for now and welcome back.

Just a thought, perhaps this thread would go over well in ATMB with a solicitation for some plebian input as to the guidelines. Not suggesting that you let us make up the rules (oh good lord no) but a general brainstorming toward the end of a nice groups function could make youse guyses jobs easier.

E.G. My 2 cents:
[ul]
[li]Solicitation and admin approval for all groups[/li][li]All groups to be independantly moderated with group leaders answering directly to administration[/li][li]Moderation of a group can be transferred within the group but no one should be allowed to mod more than two groups at a time.[/li][li]A group with one person is not a group, it’s a person. A minimum startup population required to qualify.[/li][li]A group, like a forum, should have a clear purpose and set of boundries (although these may be as esoteric as needed to accomidate different Doper goals)[/li][/ul]

Just a suggestion is all, take it for what it’s worth.

I like it. I would add that the ‘minimum group’ requirement could be met by a proposal (i.e. in ATMB) and then follow-on posters indicating they would sign up if offered.

. . . like an online petition.

Here’s another penny in the fountain, hoping it gets turned on soon.

pravnik, I got your PM, but when I tried to reply it would load. The page was blank. Guess I have to be patient a little while longer.

But to answer one thing, yes, the school I attend has it’s lineage on a wall scroll)

I can’t wait to be able to start the “None of us are Amp” group. :stuck_out_tongue:

Since it worked for me, it was probably just a permissions issue; some of you may have even been caught in the middle of a permissions change when we were going through the motions of disabling access. But yeah, depending on the ultimate decision of how/whether to implement social groups, we’ll do testing to find out what the settings need to be.

Also, nd_n8, your suggestions are much appreciated. Nothing can be promised now, but once the current kinks in the board are worked out, we’ll focus on the new stuff and get back with everyone. We definitely appreciate everyone’s patience as we move through this rough period. So, mucho thanks.

Cool. I’d like to see one for parrot-owners/lovers. It’d be great to have an easy way to share diet/training/etc. tips with other parrot people.

Looks like the permissions/access thing is still not open… :frowning:

“Nobody’s posted to this group for weeks! It’s dead, I tell you!”
“No, no, it’s just pining for the fjords!”

Any word as to when the social groups will be enabled? I tried again to join a group and it said I didn’t have suffiecient privileges.

C’mon, let’s get things working!

Patience is the river that quenches the thirst of curiosity.

They’re back on!

I still cannot post a message in a group. Have you tried yet?

I can see them, but I can’t seem to join any. Are they not fully functional, or have I just been universally black-listed?

Halp! How do I join a group? Am I just too tired to see what’s right in front of me or what?

Funny thing, you can’t seem to be able to join a group anymore (or make one). It appears that those options are disabled (which probably explains why we can, at least, see the groups again).
What Exit, nope, no clue!

Well, at least we can look at all of the purdy groups.

Yeah, I’m not seeing the option to join a new group, although there’s an option to leave the Mumper group I joined. Then Taters tried to join the PNW group I started but she doesn’t have that button either–so I tried to invite her from the control panel of the group and got the message “That user is not allowed to join Social Groups.” Just for S&G’s I tried to invite another PNW Doper and got the same message. I suspect we’re still having permissions issues…

Okay, just checked and I can post in the Mumper group, but don’t have permissions to join any other groups. Weird…

Did your post actually go through?

Wow, I see it did. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/group.php?groupid=20

Can you let me know what browser you are using and Op sys?

I have IE7 and Win XP sp2.
