I happened to read in the paper yesterday that for the first time, the little town of Bay City, Michigan will be hosting an exhibition of Dali’s stature. Between October 23 and December 23, Studio 23 will be hosting some 50 paintings of his… and seeing how culturally aware my fellow dopers are, that they have exposed me to art and music I had not appreciated before, I thought perhaps I should return the favor.
[A fair warning… I’ve never been there, and knowing Bay City, this is likely to be a relatively small gallery. I could do some scouting beforehand if we get people coming in from long distances…]
Afterward, I we could do a little window shopping downtown, or head over to a little Polish restaurant I know of.
Right now, dates are pretty well open, as this is just an idea I had yesterday, but I am planning on being at ChickDope (November 10-11)… Potentially we could merge the two, as Birch Run is only about 45 minutes or so from Bay City, but I’d almost like to do this separately if possible.
I think it’s a delightful idea (and I’m happy to bump this to say so) but I’m spread a little thin so probably can’t make it. We’re hoping to also get to Grand Rapids for the Frank Lloyd Wright glass exhibit, but we’re waiting until December or January thanks to my hectic schedule this fall.
Well, then maybe you should host a Dopefest yourself, hmm?
I saw a couple Michelangelo’s while in London… lovely, of course (I liked the Raphael’s and Botticelli’s better), but IMHO Medieval and Renaissance paintings don’t have enough variety… it’s mostly Christian images or Greco-Roman mythology. Honestly I prefer Baroque (Reubens!) and later (Monet), but I still might think about swinging down that way if the weather cooperates.
