cadolphin and I were talking today and we were reminiscing on the San DiegDopeFest we attended at Farrell’s and how much we enjoyed it. So I think it’s time to put our collective heads together and see if we can get a gathering in the greater Los Angeles Area in the next couple of months.
Things that we’ve thought about:
[ul]
[li]Meeting at a restaurant[/li][li]Harbor Cruise in Marina Del Rey[/li][li]Meeting in a park[/li][li]A beach party[/li][/ul]
Anyone in Southern California have any bright ideas beyond these? Anyone have any preferences about those ideas?
Oh yes, and how much $$ would you be willing to spend to attend? Harbor cruises can range from $10 per person for a 45 minute tour to $59 per person for dinner and dancing on the boat. I need help here, I’ve located some places, and cadolphin and I will be happy to spearhead this, but we need some input!
One of our first LA dopefests was at a museum (LACMA) followed by dinner at Marie Callender’s. I like that format. The Huntington Library is a great place to visit, with outdoor gardens and an indoors museum.
One of the difficulties with a museum visit is that latecomers will not be able to find the other dopers, especially in a large place like the Huntington.
A beach party or a meeting in a park would be good too. Many of the beaches in Orange County have firepits were you can cook food. Unfortunately there is a rule against alcohol. I’m not too familiar with parks in Los Angeles, but here’s a list: http://www.laparks.org/dos/parks/parks.htm
Harbor cruises are nice, but the time and financial investment may prove prohibitive for several of our members - you have to be at the dock at a precise time, and once you’re on the boat you can’t leave until the boat returns.
I love all these ideas. I haven’t been to the Huntington since I was 17 and would love to see it again and it was just a week or maybe 2 ago that Ric and I were talking about how we have never been to the tar pits and would love to go.
However, I’d like it to be a setting where we could visit and I don’t see how that could be done at a museum. Am I missing something? Or am I making an assumption (wanting to visit with others) that is not being shared?
WEEEEEEEEE
Let the party begin!
(who’s bringing the power tools)
Oh! I like all three of these ideas. Mainly 'cause they’re all within walking distance of my place, and I can stumble home drunk if we go to Marie Callendar’s (or better yet, Tom Bergins or Molly Malones) afterwards!
Marie Callendar’s is right there, as Java pointed out (and it’s the ritziest Marie Callendar’s you’ve ever seen!) There’s an AWESOME little Italian place not too far away, called Cafe Carrera. No, on second thought, it’s probably too small for a get-together, unless it’s much smaller than the usual LA Dopefests (I still recommend the place for anyone in the area, though). Hmmm. The museums are also not TOO far of a walk to the Farmer’s Market, which could be fun. I’ll try and think of some other suggestions, as well.
Oh, and I’m not voting against the Huntington Gardens or anything – just more in favor of the place that’s completely convienient to me. 'Cause I’m selfish like that.
Farmer’s Market… I haven’t been there since I was in high school. I think I need to get out more… LOL
So, any good places to eat there? I was looking on the ‘net’ for good places around the tar pits and it sounds like there might be some good places there.
I’ve already told Rico that we’ll have check out a few places just to make sure before we deside for sure… I’m not sure I’ve convinced him though.
OK, let’s go for Saturday, March 8th, 2003. Perfect - as cadolphin and I will be celebrating 18 months of marriage on that date.
We’ll tentatively meet at the La Brea Tar Pits at 1:00 in the afternoon.
After touring the Tar Pits and the George C. Page Museum we’ll adjourn to Marie Callendar’s Restaurant at approximately 5:00PM. We’ll have dinner, the traditional Doper toast, and good fellowship.
Afterwards, you are all free to get together at any local watering hole. As one of this couple is a very very light drinker and the other is not a drinker at all, I’m going to have to pass that part of the planning on to someone else.
These plans, of course, are subject to change due to weather and other concerns.
I was thinking of a get together where we eat, talk and laugh. I figure a couple hours.
Rico said he didn’t want to do the usual restaurant thing. In leu of that, a BBQ at the beach or a picnic at the park sounds good to me. Then, he thought of a harbor cruise. That’s only 40 minutes so I could do that.
It all sounds fun to me. I really wish I could join in with ya’ll, but my health sucks. I’m good for a couple hours but not 5 hours. (I TOTALLY HATE MY HEALTH!!!)
I had no idea the tar pits was an all day thing. I’d love to go but it’s impossible.
I’d really like to join in but I can’t very well ask everyone else (including my husband) to give up doing what they want to do. But if there is something else… oh please!
