So, I opened my big mouth and asked when the next SoCal Doperfest was. Turns out that whoever asks it is in charge of coordinating it. Either that, or Arnold pulled a fast one on me.
So here are my thoughts:
Bruno’s Italian Cafe on San Marcos Blvd. in San Marcos, about two miles south of 78. They’ve got a great buffet as well as food-of-the-gods pizza. Prices are a bit high, but service is pretty darn good.
Now, when’s a good time. I’m pretty much free on the weekends, when I figure everyone else is as well. Speak up! I want a consensus here.
Hmmmm… maybe I can take some of my vacation time and drive down. I don’t know any of you, but it’s a dern good way to meetcha! It’s quite a drive from Vancouver though… anyone else living in the city want to help drive? Nice sportscar! <dangles treats over steering wheel>
Well, I certainly don’t have any objections to meeting in LA. I can crash with my bro in Azusa. Trouble is, I don’t know of anyplace in LA that would be cool enough for a Doperfest. Actually, I don’t know of anyplace in LA, period. Remember how new I am?
So, guys, come on. Help a new SoCal-er out. Where do you want to meet?
FWIW, it’s about 1,300 miles from Vancouver, B.C. to L.A. Maybe a little more. If you drive down “The 5” (PurpleCrackWhore pointed out that Southern Californians call their freeways “The (number of the freeway)”) it will take you about 20 hours. At least, that’s about how long it took me to get to Bellingham from here. A good stopping point is Redding, CA, as it’s about 1/2 way. Be prepared for a hot, ugly drive down the 5.
Of course, if you already had a pilot’s license and access to an airplane, you could do it in a day.
Catrandom, San Marcos is between the Orange County border and San Diego, next to Escondido, east of Carlsbad.
Here’s a suggestion of a place to meet: at 1 PM on a Saturday or Sunday at the Marie Callender’s restaurant next to the LA County Art Museum. Then if people are interested we can go visit the Art Museum or the Tar Pits. This is actually a pretty nice Marie Callender’s, very elegant. We could make up a schedule - show up at Marie Callender’s between 1 and 3, then visit the museum afterwards.
The disadvantages of this suggestion: there is not the possibility of late arrivals being able to join the group.
Advantage: People can drive there and get home in the same day without a long drive late at night.
If people prefer the meet in a restaurant for chatting and drinking, and spending the afternoon/evening there, a friend of mine has recommended this restaurant: Cozymel’s in El Segundo.
Duuuuuuuude(ette)!! I got my BA in Azusa! I live just about 3 miles south of Azusa! Weird and stuff!
Anywho…I’m game except for the weekend of the 15th; I’ll be in Ohio. San Marcos is a bit of a drive, though. BUT I am all for JohnnyLA’s Marie Callendar’s suggestion. I’ve been there several times after a day of museum-hopping, and it really is a nice place. It’s far nicer than your average MC’s. (In fact, I think this is the original restaurant, and is just called "Callendar’s).
The place in El Segundo sounds hipper, but I could go for the tar pits…
singing
Pico and Sepulveda
Pico and Sepulveda
Doheny…
Cahuenga…
La Brea…
Tar Pits
TAR PITS!
…
*BTW: The La Brea Tar Pits are nowhere near Pico and Sepulveda. But I didn’t write the song!
I am up for Arnold’s idea.
Sounds like mucho fun.
We gotta have it before the 5th, so we can have the single Arnold. We know how marriage changes people.
Once he gets married he will be way too happy to be hanging out with the Dopers.
I vote for a Saturday in July. (Aside from the 15th.)
Woohoo! Flying! Hey, I just had my first flight today. It was just an orientation, but I got to do everything but land and chatter on the radio! Yay! I’m addicted! It’s worse than crack.
20 hours huh? That could be fun… No problem with hot, I’ll just put the top down! I love having a convertible. Remind me to get a nice sunhat. Still, it would be nice to have someone else in the car to split the driving with. Anyone along the way want a ride? You must be able to drive standard.
Oh, it is*… much worse! And more expensive! Heh heh heh. Another one hooked!
*Johnny L.A. would like to point out that he’s never tried crack. But he will attest that flying is extremely addictive.
I like Arnold’s idea. Sounds like a fun place to go, and I haven’t been to the tar pits for a long time.
pat
PS:
Lord Vega, we should have a SB County/Ventura gettogether sometime. Sure it will be a party of two, but thats ok. We will start a trend and eveyrone will wanna come up here.
