F3MB/SDMB So. Cal. Post Game Show

Well, somebody has to start this thread!

After a false start (the oil annunciator lit on the bike), I headed up National to Robertson. Up to Wilshire to the La Brea Tar Pits. As I turned the corner, Arnold was just walking from the parking structure. I coughed up five bucks to park ( a lot of places let motorcycles park free. Not here!) and met him on the sidewalk. We went to the entry area and met Catrandom, Chef, Phouka (pronounced “pooka”), Ursa Major, zyada, pricciar, Rick and dogsbody. We waited around for Melin and Highlander and family, but they didn’t show; so we got our entry-stickers and went inside.

You’d think that LACMA, being the fin institution it purports to be, would have a better collection; but everything in there was old! Seriously. There were things in there from way back. You think they’d be able to afford some new stuff!

Actually, the collection was fine. However, I was asked to leave at one point. They don’t allow motorcycle helmets in the building. After checking my brain bucket at the ticket office, I was allowed to return. Ursa Major was pointed out by the docents as The Loud Pointy Guy, and Catrandom set off an alarm by getting too close to a big box. Catrandom served as a guide for all of the religious paintings and sculptures. I guess it’s useful having a sister who’s a sister! Somewhere along the line, Dogsbody and zyada disappeared.

Eventually it was time to see the modern furniture exhibit. I just made a quick run-through, as I noticed there was a coffee cart outside and I wanted some caffeine. I had a cookie too.

Everyone joined me after a bit at a table outside. The missing women arrived and we chatted for a while. Around 17:15 we decided to head over to Marie Callender’s.

When we got there, Melin, Rick, Ruffian and Brian were at the bar. We were quickly shown to a table and everyone took his seat. From there on it was a typical Dopefest (or Fathomfest). Shayna showed up just before the waitress came to take our order. She had to think fast to decide what to eat!

As for the rest of the details, I’ll leave those to the other attendees to fill in!

Pictures? Did anyone take any pictures? Preferably with a digital camera? I’d love to see what went on.

Sigh…Sounds like it was a fun time.

We had fun, and we have learned not to leave permanent records  Actually, dogsbody was the only one who brought a camera, and she didn’t have any film, so this one was not recorded for posterity.

We accidentally got split up in the museum, unfortunately (though I got all the men to myself :D) but we all met up again later, and dinner was a blast.

Catrandom

LACMA? What da heck is that? Not all of us know LA Acronyms ;).

LACMA - Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Yeah, I was bummed about the camera thing. Oh well. The digital camera is on my list of things to buy, but there are other things I have to get first.

Phouka, Zyada and I ended up roaming together, though for a few minutes there I realized I’d lost everyone. I was hoping we’d find everyone else before I had to take off, but fate was against me, so I said g’bye to the two of them and headed out.

Can’t wait for the next gathering, though.

There is a companion thread in the Fathom board here:

What I remember:

Walking up to the musuem, I still haven’t figured out where the ticket office is, but I spot a group of rather diverse people and think “Could that be my group?” Bingo!

Pricciar was wearing a Bert and Ernie shirt and we teased him about his resemblance to Bert. Which led to a discussion of the possible homosexual relationship between Bert and Ernie. “Why did Bert care whether Ernie got crumbs in his own bed?”

Arnold showing up with Johnny L.A. Arnold had bubble stuff but couldn’t get a good bubbling going. I gave it a shot also, but didn’t have much better luck. (I was kinda surprised the obvious jokes didn’t occur)

Oohing (sp?) and aahhing over the Heade exhibit (incredible light effects). Going through the rest of the exhibits with Phouka and Dogsbody. Making snide remarks about the quality of some of the paintings and the fact that they were donated by Hearst.

Getting a bad case of the “I wants” in the decorative exhibit, especially a fireplace that had Phouka, dogsbody and I all drooling. Then giggling when we found out we were in the Disney collection.

After dogsbody left, Phouka helped me move my car, then we got some water and had a wonderful long chat about her school and classwork, my teaching and events on the board. Then we went to check out the gift shop and just before I could drag her into the Islamic art exhibit, we spotted the rest of the group. More general talk. (I think there was an actress at the next table  )

Then we went to Marie Callender’s by way of the Tar Pits. There was tar bubbling out of the ground by the sidewalk - Phouka apparently was disappointed that there was a fence around the pit, so she had to be shown the mini-tar pit.

Children would love to play in the tar - Arnold knows a couple he’d like to see doing just that!

Met up with the rest of the group and got seated. Interesting note: all of the guys got seated on one side of the table and all of the women on the other side (pretty much). I’m not complaining! That way I could look at all of the handsome men.

Going to the bathroom a couple of times en masse - and spending 15+ minutes just talking in there.

Discussing stripping, prostitution and belly dancing w/ Arnold and CatRandom. Actually, Arnold, I think we veered from what you were trying to get to. If you’d like to discuss it more, email me.

Having a nice long talk with Ursa Major (who is younger than I thought, actually he’s younger than me - by a few months)

Johnny L.A. wants to be a pirate and made a pirate ship out of a french fry and a couple of toothpicks, then made a smiley face for Shayna. Maybe he should become a food sculptor.

People kept asking me why I was in L.A. You mean, the chance to meet Melin, Ursa Major, Arnold, and Shayna isn’t enough? Ok, how about getting to see Phouka again?

I didn’t get to interact with DRY much, but he’s a cutie. DRY, if you ever say you’re ugly again, I’m going to come back out and spank you!

Summary: I had a blast as usual. I wish each and every one of you lived right next door. (Not only would I have incredible neighbors, but there would be a constant party  ) And Ursa Major is officially on my crush list.

Yar har, me hearties! Shiver me timbers an’ walk me plank!

I had a great time.
Thanks so much, Arnold, for putting everything together. I almost forgive you for wearing neither the Hemp Suit, or the Hawaiian shirt.

It was a nice trip through the museum. It had a neat layout, and we got to see some nice pieces. The running commentary was a fun and important part of the trip, although it did cause us to get ssshed by the guard lady.

Contrary to popular belief, Phouka is not a six foot rabbit that only I can talk to. In fact she is a very pretty human of the female type. Under six foot.

Great choice on the restaurant our waitress was nice (Not as pretty as the Orange County one, but nice nonetheless) the food was good, and there was plenty of room for everyone.
I wanted to do a happy dance when I was surprised to see Shayna show up. I didn’t know for sure that she was coming, and it was great to see her there.

Then a little while later DRY showed up, and I wanted to do another happy dance. He is a great poster, and a fun guy in real life as well.

Afterwards, I got to hang out with Melin and Rick. They are both Insurance people. They were trading stories from the business. You know how exciting that can be. Hey, I can’t complain, I got a free Shirley Temple out of the deal. Just kidding, it was nice to get to know those guys a little bit better and listen to the piano player.

Hmmm, who we talked about has already been mentioned. I think its about time I mentioned what was talked about.

In no particular order:

I can’t wait til the next one. It was fabulous to see the old faces, and just as fabulous to meet all the new ones. I look forward to seeing dogsbody, phouka, DRY and zyada at the next gettogether. (Ok, its a bit of a stretch to expect zyada.)

pat

Damn. It sounds like I missed a fun afternoon. You’re going to have to plan another one soon!

"I know you all, and will awhile uphold
The unyoked humour of your idleness"

–Henry IV, Part 1, Act 1, Scene ii

MMM…spankings…

But don’t believe Zyada, as I really am…err, photogenically challenged. We really did have a camera but I TOLD them to change rolls before attempting to take my picture!

Maybe next time, they’ll learn.

Note to self: Clean ears out before next LA doper meeting

(I heard absolutely no talk of horniest dopers. Though I did note that everyone suddenly got very quiet when I first entered the dining area.)

My summary:

I regret not being able to go to the museum and tar pits with the rest of the group. I did not get to meet Highlander or Dogsbody at all. I also regret not having the chance to interact at all with Rick, JohnnyLA, and Catrandom, and only interacted very briefly with Zyada and Melin.

On the other hand, Ruffian, Brian, Shayna, Ursa Major, Arnold, Phouka, Pricciar and Chief are fascinating individuals! (I hope I didn’t leave anyone out)

Ruffian (Laura) is absolutely right in that our doperfests are too scandal free, and what we really need is for someone to get drunk and/or have an affair with another doper to really liven things up. (I’m paraphrasing here)

Any volunteers to come to LA and show us how it’s done?

Finally, thank you all for a wonderful time. Sorry I ralfed (sp) all over the table…

Dammit! I have an aunt in LA who keeps telling me to visit!!!

Are you volunteering to set up the next one?

Brian and I had a late start and missed the museum crowd, although we did cruise LACMA for a few as well as an animal adoption fair going on in the park by the La Brea tar pits. We went over to Callender’s at 5:30 and met Melin and Rick there, and then the whole museum crowd stampeded in and we were off. To our seats, that is.

It was a really enjoyable time. Shayna and DRY came a little later on, but we had a grand time hanging with them. This was similar to Gladstone’s–Bri, Ursa, pricciar and I wound up on the end of the table. Thus, little to no conversation happened with zyada, Catrandom, JohnnyLA, and Arnold, who were on the other end. (Phouka and a few others did some seat-switching to allow more time to chat with others.)

Shayna was showing us her nailpolish and Brian commented on her little hands. Bri held up his massive palm to contrast to hers, and Shayna was amazed at how long his fingers were. Then she offered a great compliment–“Ah, you lucky bitch!” Bri and I were chuckling quite a while over that one! We’re planning on going to the Hollywood Bowl with her in a couple of weeks, so that will be more fun time to hang together.

At one point during the evening, we started swapping driver’s licenses for inspection. Shayna does not look her age–as in, she appears quite a bit younger! pric had a hilarious photo, and we learned Rick was our elder and Chief our junior (and no, I’m not going to share their ages, I know better than that!).

I had fish & chips, with the fish almost immediately painfully packing up between my gum and crown tooth. Ugh, it hurt. Bri ordered a pizza that did unholy things to his breath–what in the world was on that thing?

We all cheered JohnnyLA’s pirate ship–in fact, at one point Shayna pointed at his ship at the other end of the table and laughed loudly–with her mouth full of food. MMmm…see-food…

Ursa, Chief, phouka, pricciar and I had a conversation about favorite Simpson lines, and we also discussed some of the funny moments from the “Sperm Count of Doom” and “Embarrassing Sexual Moments” thread. (I just can’t imagine someone overhearing parts of our conversation–talking about pink unicorns, magical silver keys, vaginal houses of horror, using scrotums as punching bags…) There was a whole lotta laughin’.

DRY came a little later on and was a little quieter than the rest (then again, most people are quieter than the crowd at our end!) but fit in nicely. He’s funny, kind, and was a great addition to the company.

Yes, we talked about board stuff, but fortunately there wasn’t much griping or digging up old news, at least on my end. Instead, it was just a grand time.

I’m all for doing it again.

official, but the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival is going on right now at California Lutheran University.

My roommate and I are going to this Friday’s showing of Taming of the Shrew - as a western no less.

Show starts at 8, and I’d be happy to give further details to those who are interested. Or not.

::COFFEE SPEW:: :eek:
Oh…you meant…never mind! For a moment, I wondered if I had been FAR more drunk than I thought, because I didn’t remember…

(Laura–I warned you I was quite a bit less reserved on the boards than in real life!)

Alas, if it’s in LA, no. My experience with LA: driving PAST it with aforementioned aunt en route to San Francisco. In 1994.

However, if Honolulu is being considered for a Doperfest site, then I’ll be right there! Literally!

Gee, Audrey, did my last post get your attention??

 :stuck_out_tongue:  :stuck_out_tongue:

Darn right it did! Luckily I don’t drink anything at my computer… it’d be a bitch to clean!

My my… what REALLY happened that night anyway? Did DRY provide the evening entertainment? Is that why he didn’t hear the horny dopers conversation? Was he dancing on the table? Sober or not? Is that why he ralfed? Details, people, I want DETAILS!
