SoCal / L.A. Dopefest anyone?

There seem to be plenty of us around here -when was the last Dopefest? I’ve been around for ~2.5 years but I’ve only been a Doper… let’s see… 9 months.

I’m relatively poor so I don’t know anything about the good restaurants etc. You’ll have to help me out with ideas for where we can hold it. Don’t worry though, I’m willing to splurge slightly for a good night out.

Also, at times I appear outgoing but the truth is I fear meeting new people. Especially INTERNET people. Those are the worst kind. But from what I’ve seen, Dopers seem to be a pretty good bunch. (for internet people)

Any interest/ideas?

Uh-oh, now you’ve done it.

The rule is: you bring up a DopeFest, you plan said DopeFest.

I did my time planning an LA DopeFest years ago at Buca di Beppos in Pasadena. Sheez, gang, how long ago was that? Were DL and I even married? 5 years at least, I think.

But hey, BdB was a great place for Dopers to get together–we can always go back.

And yes, Dopers are great people. We’ve been to at least 6 DopeFests…I think (lessee, BdB, Marie Callendar’s, the Dopetoberfest or whatever it was called, Farrell’s, the first one years ago at some restaurant on Universal Citywalk, and then one at an English-style pub)…and they’ve all been a blast. We haven’t gone to one since Dopetoberfest, thogh.

And BTW…You’ll find internet people are just, well, people, and in this case, good people at that.

I’ll be in Costa Mesa from August 25th until early on the 28th. The evening of the 25th (Friday) would be ideal for me. Short notice… sorry.

As far as being shy to meet strangers… I am, too. No worries. Though I haven’t been invited again to a Portland Dopefest since 2004, when I spoke perhaps three sentences in the course of an entire afternoon. Hmm. :dubious:

Anyways, if not in time for you to plan an actual dopefest… If anyone wants to get together for coffee or something, my email’s in my profile.

Nuh-uh! We’re people who wear really loud shirts that you otherwise wouldn’t be caught dead sitting at the same table with. I’ve been to a few Dopefests, mostly low-key affairs, although the Tar Pits were fun. Taaaar Pits!

I work in the Irvine/Costa Mesa area! I could go for a movie or coffee or something, if anyone’s so inclined.

Heh. I work at Callender’s Grill (a new, slightly upscale version of Marie Callender’s at the Howard Hughes Center in Westchester / Culver City). It’s a pretty decent place, although I don’t know how I’d feel about having it there, I could probably hook up a few free slices of pie or something.

Sardo’s Bar on a Saturday night is a very fun Karaoke bar, pretty laid back and fun. I am sure a gaggle of doper scould make that good time.

If you let me know at least a week before then I can request off of work but I’d really like to go! I am located in Irvine, so around there would be ideal for me. Costa Mesa on the 25th would be fine for me.

I’m out of the country for two weeks starting on 8/25.
But don’t let that stop you, if others can make it then.
I know when Johnny shows up he will demand the Kings Head in Santa Monica.
I would not mind Bucca de Beppo again, or somewhere new.

I vote for as far north as is reasonably possible!

And Saturday is much better than Friday for me.

Was that a slam on my sartorial splendor? I believe it was!

Affairs of honor must be settled with blood. Luckily I nicked myself shaving this morning, so you’re off the hook. Consider yourself lucky!

You schedule it, I’ll try to make it.

Well, I work in Pasadena and live in Studio City…so really about anywhere is fine with me. Bucca is a blast though, if pasadena is out for people there’s the one at Universal or on ventura in Encino.

You guys are going to make me wish I’d never left SoCal.

For 20 minutes.

In…ah, hell with it…

:stuck_out_tongue:

I would probably come. My husband is downtown 4 days a week and next month I’ll be spending most of my time in Westwood. Since those locations are 90 and 80 miles from our house respectively, we’ll go about anywhere. After 90 miles, it’s all relative.

Hmmmmm…are you sure you want to deal with folks like these? (Scroll down about halfway.)

Sure you do!

Or Santa Monica. (Whose 15-minutes-from-my-place distance is purely incidental in my mentioning it.)

And I wouldn’t be so quick to discount Rigamarole’s offer of free pie. (The fact that the Howard Hughes Center is even closer to me is even more incidental.) :stuck_out_tongue:

Well who doesn’t like free pie & chips?

I want in on this, too, as long as it’s not too far away. I’m over in Little Armenia, just east of the 101 and west of Vermont.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I’m all about Pasadena (seeing as I live here) but I could probably drive my lazy butt somewhere else. Bucca de Beppo could be good, or possibly Lucky Baldwin’s if the crowd isn’t too big - it’s kind of a small place. They have the best selection of European beers that I’ve seen around here. They finished their Belgian Beer fest (I think the beer list is still on the website) which was really fantastic.

Gangster Octopus’s suggestion of a Karaoke bar would be fun, too. Or maybe a SoCal Doper Poker game?

 Glendale isn’t east of the 101 and west of Vermont.

Costa Mesa or Pasadena, no matter. Sign me up.

I’d come down from Fresno for some pie…
