Dopers who are now guests...

Do you regret letting your paying membership “lapse?” My subscription is up this month, and I’m trying to decide if I should pony up the bucks or let it go. (Money is not the objection, FWIW.)

I let mine lapse because I didn’t feel like the title “Member” and a post count were worth $15. Then again, you’d be paying half that, plus keeping your ability to be a member at half price. I might have paid at that rate.

I paid. Frankly, I find the adds a little distracting and as much time as I surf here, I figured it was worth seven and half bucks to make them go away for a year.

No.

The only time it slightly bothers me is when I post something that doesn’t go along with the majority of what other posters are posting.

It would be nice if other posters could see that I’ve been here for a while and I’m not posting against the consensus of opinion just to be a troll.

I miss my location, but like that my ~12,000 post count is hidden.

It’s a wash.

I got distracted with with a hell of a year last year and let my Charter membership lapse. I would have paid the Charter fee, but can’t work up the motivation to pay the regular fee. Maybe if I couldn’t search, it would be worth it.

I don’t care either way. I kindof miss my post count, just for the “neat!” factor but it’s cool.

Don’t you also lose the ability to search and have PMs?

I think I’m going to let mine lapse finally. I have too much other stuff on my plate right now (FT job, side business, new baby, newly-redesigned family budget, summer activities) to have much interest in ponying up just to keep my “Charter” status, location and post count.

I’ve been hanging around a lot less lately anyway, and as long as I can come back and post stuff every now and then, I’m cool. I’ll even make it a point to click on cool looking ads when they cross my path and support SDMB sponsors from time-to-time.

Plus, I long for the day when we have a society without classes. If we’re all guests or members or visitors or whatever, no one will be able to lord their title over another. I’m voluntarily giving up my nobility. So there.

I just got the notice, and I’m letting it lapse to guest. Partly for financial reasons, and partly because of the recent brouhaha… I’m no longer as confident that this place will be around in 12 months.

I let mine lapse out of pure forgetfulness, and I don’t miss it. The ads don’t bother me that much, and I just couldn’t be bothered to renew once it had already lapsed. You can still search and get PMs.

I let mine lapse because I can’t stand dealing with PayPal anymore.

Nope, still get the search. Being male, I’ve never had PMS, but I don’t think the loss of it would upset anyone.

On a completely unrelated note, you do get to keep your private messaging.

No, I don’t regret it. If this wasnt’ the only message board site that work hasn’t blocked, I would never post here. Alas, desperate times and all that.

I do wish that people could see I’ve posted my share and I’m not fresh off the old turnip truck, though.

Search is still available when the hamsters permit, and I can still get PM’s. The ads aren’t that bad at all. Log out and you will be able to see what a guest sees. I don’t care about having my post count and location shown.

No, I don’t.

From the other side, despite my current financial situation, I renewed. It’s worth it to me.

I use adblocker software, so I didn’t even notice when mine lapsed. On a related note, I had occasion to open the boards once on a computer without adblock, and was amazed at what an eyesore it’s become. I’d probably leave rather than put up with that.

I have seen the boards without adblocker, and don’t actually think they are that bad. Ads are ubiquitous in our society, anyway. But at work, all Javascript is disabled so all I see is

Risky content removed from this page (script).

over and over.

I wish I had.

The 50 PM upper limit makes it much much harder to moderate the Mafia game I’m running.

I suppose that probably wouldn’t apply to you, though.

I don’t regret it at all. While this is a very fine message board with lots of deserving posters, it is not so much better than the hundreds of other free ones out there that I was willing to cough up a fee…TRM
