Down Sized

I was notified at 3:00 this afternoon that I am one of sixteen people who were laid off today. I am 61 years old and have spent twenty-five plus years in a very specialized industry. I am pretty damn despondent at this moment. I need a hug.

Dude, that blows.

Hopefully they’ll make things as decent as possible with a severance package and such. I’ll send good thoughts and prayers your way.

{{{{{LouisB}}}}} So sorry to hear that.

And what Zyada said–if they don’t treat you right, give 'em a fight.

Sending lots of hugs to you Louis. Right now you’ll probably need every hug offered. I understand what it’s like to spend many years with a company and then leave one day. Don’t be surprised when you experience a feeling of loss. It’s okay to grieve. When you’re ready to do so, look for the new opportunities you’ve always wanted to explore.

You’ll come out all right.

If you don’t receive a whopping severance package, your fist step should absolutely be to contact a lawyer. To give you an idea, when I was down-sized after four years, I was offered a weeks pay for every year, my vaction (of course), plus a months pay. All told, I would have walked with almost three months full pay (instead I transferred from Ohio to North Carolina, but that’s a whole 'nuther story). People over the five year mark got a the above, except a month-and-a-halfs pay instead of a months. Ten years got two months…etc.

If they are keeping people that have the same skill set(s) as you, but are paid less, you might have a case of agism/old-age discrimination.

Wish you luck, man.

Damn, make that “…your *first[/r] step…”

Anyway, good luck.
