When downloading files, my PC asks me how I want to save the files. I always say: “save to disk.” Next, the PC automatically fills in the file save name, such as “as40rTy74.”
Not a lot of information there, which makes it hard to differentiate between files in my “Downloads” section of Windows. Is there any problem with me naming the file the way I want to name it, such as: “App. for Chicago Board of Trade” etc.?
When you download files, the default name for the saved file will be the name of the file as it appears on the server that you are downloading from. There is no reason why you can’t rename the file to something that will be recognizable to you, as jazzmine points out.
Most of the non-mp3 files I download always have cryptic names, so I rename them. You may want to set up some sort of separate folder or folders, depending on what types of files you download, or how often. Makes it easier to find and run them.
I generally don’t rename files when I’m downloading them, but I do save them to the Desktop until after I’m done installing or doing whatever with it. This way I don’t have to dig through a common folder that has a ton of stuff in it. I never have a lot on my Desktop (unlike my desktop which is cluttered beyond belief) so downloaded files are easy to find.
Non-install files I rename to whatever I want and file away somewhere appropriate.
Install files stay on my desktop until after I’ve installed the program and decided if I like it. If this is something I’d want to have if I ever reformat, I then cut&paste the install file to a “Install Files” folder that I made on my back up drive. That way whenever I have to reformat my drive, I have all the non-standard issue programs I want in one nifty little folder. There would be no problem (as has been stated already) with renaming the files … I just never do (lazyness factor?).
