Dr. Demento

Since Howard Stern happily lists all the stations that carry his show, I find this unlikely to say the least. While I haven’t listened to the good Doctor’s show in many a year, I can’t imagine anyone finding its determinedly PG-rated fun offensive, especially since it usually plays at midnight or some other godforsaken hour.

Having said that, I don’t know why the Doc would be barred from listing his station affiliates. Maybe the syndicate’s agreement with the stations guarantees them a certain “exclusivity” in promoting and scheduling the show, so that anyone interested in hearing it has to contact their local station, not the syndicate or Dr. Demento himself. I suppose this is of some small benefit to the stations, but it seems kind of a draconian policy for something so minor.

I’ll just add that IMO, Dr. Demento’s beep version of George Carlin’s “Ten Words You Can’t Say on Television” is funnier than the original. The sound effects win every time.

THIS SITE lists stations that stream his show over the internet, if that’s any help.

I miss that show.

I was on that show a couple of times in the early 90’s. A friend across the hall had a “gag” band The Sponge Awareness Foundation and they made comedy music. They needed an annoucer voice for a couple of songs, one of them was “Zamphir’s Evil Twin.” (Obviously the best song on the “Looks like Rain, Tastes like Chicken” album.)

That song was played a couple of times on the radio, and it was a HUGE kick to hear my own voice on national syndicated radio!

So while we’re on the subject of Dr. Demento and Dead Puppies, can anyone explain to me what “One more time for Roman Reska!” means?

Roman Hruska. He was a senator from Nebraska, where the Ogden Edsl folks hailed from.

To those who would protest Dr. Demento, here’s a quote from the well known tune by Benny Bell:

*And now, folks, my story is ended:
I think it is time I should quit.
If any of you feel offended,
Stick your head in a barrel of

Shaving cream, be nice and clean,
Shave every day and you’ll always look keen.* :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh man! I’ve been wondering who did the shaving cream song for so long, thanks for posting that!

Dr. Demento Rules!!!

For the most up-to-date Demento info, including the various means of getting the show, read the Usenet newsgroup rec.music.dementia.

KMET?!? Johnny, you take me back!

The artist is shown as Benny Bell. It’s a pseudonym for Ben Samberg. The vocalist on the record is Paul Wynn. Originally released 1946 on the Cocktail Party Songs label, and reissued on Vanguard 35183 in February 1975, due to revived popularity from airplay on the Dr. Demento show.

“Little bit of Heaven 94.7 KMET, tweedle dee.”

I still own a Mighty MET baseball jersey.

So why would we be singing the song one more time for him?

The Mighty MET is where I first encountered the Dr. Demento show back in the mid-70s. I was stationed at March AFB outside of Riverside, and I never would have made it through those boring Sunday nights without the Good Doctor. Gee, I wonder why you never hear “Kinko The Clown” any more?

I remember that station. Remember how they NEVER put their logo right-side up, just to make you do a double take?

[slight hijack]If you remember KMET, you need to read Radio Waves by Jim Ladd. The Lonesome LA Cowboy gives the inside scoop on the station, Mary Turner, Gonzer, Ace, The Fish Report With A Beat…the works!

Cynthia Fox

Paraquat Kelly

Jeff Gonzer

‘The Burner’ Mary Turner

Jim Ladd

And remember this?

Humday Monday
Titillating Tuesday
Humpday
Champaign Thursday (their payday)
Finally Friday

‘Humpday’ has remained in the lexicon.

And of course, silenus beat me to some of the names.

Oh, incidentally… I met Cynthia Fox at the Ren Faire once. Oh, man, was she cute! Good thing I was wearing a sporran.

I still listen to Jim Ladd Monday nights on KLOS.

KMET, KNAC… KLOS is a mere shadow of a bygone era…
