Dr. Demento

I seem to recall that Uncle Joe Benson used to work at KNAC before he went over to KLOS (then some other station, then KLOS again, then God knows where…).

Would that have been in the early 1980’s?

I actually heard Gonzer a couple of years ago on a new station in Charlotte, North Carolina. Must have been a network gig, starting new stations.

I always loved Jim’s sets. I may have disagreed with his politics, but man could that man put together songs to make a point.

Was any other Doper there for the great White House Phone Assault over paraquat?

As a teenager growing up in Dayton, OH, I used to tape his show all the time when it was on WOXY (Oxford, OH). I have since lost the tapes. :frowning: Many of those songs are still going through my head after all these years.

I currently have a few Dr. Demento CDs, along with his first three vinyl albums. Great stuff.

Can anyone with more time to Google, than I do find a transcript of an old fish report?

KMET, goodness you guys are bringing back memories.

Cynthia Fox

For a bit of the Fish Report either read Radio Waves, or see page 9 here.

Hruska is most famous for defending Richard Nixon’s (ultimnately unsuccessful) nomination of Harold Carswell to the Supreme Court with this response to criticism that Carswell’s judicial record was mediocre:

Perhaps Ogden Edsl was admitting that Dead Puppies wasn’t the greatest song, but still deserved a place on the radio.

More on Hruska here.

Heh. I used to listen to Dr. D on WYSP 94 in Philly during the 70’s. Same deal, Sunday nights. Kinko the Clown was hilarious! Kinko/FedEx would likely sue somebody if it started to get airplay, now (all the more reason to play it!)

I first heard the Doctor on CHUM-FM, Toronto, back in the late '70s. One night he played Jef Jaisun’s “Friendly Neighborhood Narco Agent”, and it took me 25 years to track down a copy of that record!

I was always partial to the White Collar Holler

Well, I rise up every morning at a quarter to eight
Some woman who’s my wife tells me not to be late
I kiss the kids goodbye, I can’t remember their names
And week after week, it’s always the same

And it’s Ho, boys, can’t you code it, and program it right
Nothing ever happens in the life of mine
I’m hauling up the data on the Xerox line

‘It’s Funny Five Tiiiiiime!!!’

‘It’s time for Number One…!’

(Continuing the hijack)

Anyone remember KPPC out of LA in the late 60’s? One of the first FM rock album stations. Many of the DJ’s moved from KPPC to KMET when it shut down.

What are your top 3 Dr Demento songs?

“Boobs A lot” (Holy Mobile Rounders)
“Shaving Cream”
“Pico and Selpulveda” (Felix Figeroa)

I remember trying to stay up late enough on Sunday nights to hear the Funny Five.

Eventually, the radio station switched Dr. Demento to an even MORE inconvenient time slot … early Saturday mornings. Every now and then, I’d have to get up for an academic competition on a Saturday and I’d catch a few minutes of the show while getting ready to go, but otherwise I never heard it anymore.

Correction: Holy Modal Rounders.
