What ever happened to Dr Demento?
He’s not broadcasting anymore.
Doesn’t look like he has, from the information on Dr. Demento. Perhaps your local station moved his show, or stopped carrying it?
I think his popularity has been dwindling for quite some time now. I’ve recently met several people around my age and younger who have never heard of him. In my junior year at college my roommates and I would spend every Sunday night listening to him, drinking heavily, and sewing. I will readily agree, I was kind of a goober, but I tell ya, kids today don’t know what they’re missing.
Yep, the ol’ Doctor used to keep me in stitches too.
As to the ol’Doctor losing popularity, I say “Noooooooo!” Yes, his schedule’s been jacked around a bit in Chicago, but Dememnto introduced me to such wordsmiths as Spike Jonze, Tm Lehrer, Alan Sherman and Weird Al. I learned to distingiush betweenn comedy and gross-out jokes. I first heard the political parodies of The Capitol Steps on Demento.
And, of course, I learned two things from the Frantics:
-
There are dirty words in the newspaper.
-
The first principle of Tae Kwon Leep is: Get in the first shot. Boot to the head!
But seriously, Demento was an education for me as a kid. Hard to accept that kids aren’t getting that grooming to appreciate real humor. Instead they watch the crap on Leno and Def Comedy Jam.
Dr Demento is still on the air. A local station broadcasts his show every Sunday night.
It is unwise to tip the vessel of knowledge, my son.
He’s been gone from my area for over a year now.
Did anyone click on the “find radio station” link on his page? It says this:
How could it possibly be a benefit to NOT tell you when/where the show is?
I just don’t understand.
