Ugh. My bad. I shouldn’t have started what would obviously turn into a hijack. He just said that he disagreed with something and then went on to describe something completely unrelated. We are talking about what food pantries will generally accept, not what they arguably should accept or what DrD would eat.
I’m very sorry. I just started donating regularly to my local food bank and I love them.
Has anyone considered the possibility that perhaps @DrDeth is actually learning from his years at the straight dope? And maybe he actually read his cire this time
Yeah, it’s a classic case of - there’s a useful point to be made, as in “the best-by date on a can doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be donated, check with your food pantry first. The end.” But he had to turn it into “I have special knowledge, Big Can is lying to you, I eat expired food all the time and it’s fine, everyone else should do the same.”
Someone please award him a gold star for being clever and thrifty so we can all move on.
Welcome to the Dope. You’ll find @Stranger_On_A_Train to be eminently readable, as well as knowledgeable on many disciplines. Kind of an inside-out Dunning-Kruger .
You’ll note from a few posts up that he accused John Oliver of failing to disclose that one of the felony murder charges he talked about had been overturned on appeal. Oliver did mention this, the trouble is that our hero never saw the show that he was bloviating about. So, no.
For all the bitching and moaning he did in that thread, the least he could’ve done is watch the 20 minute youtube video.
IIRC, once that was explained to him, then he complained that it wasn’t mentioned until later in the video and the article he read (from the OP?) didn’t mention it.
It’s like when someone goes on and on about how much they don’t like a movie when all they know about it is what they extrapolated from a few trailers.
I mean, you guys were egging him on a lot in the food stamp thread. From the get go the tone to him was hostile, which of course pushes him to respond back to defend himself.
Yeah, he went too far with it, but you guys kept engaging. Why would he stop if you keep on arguing with him? Especially when you’d made him mad?
I mean, you even had citations that agreed with him, but then still treated him like he was wrong. The food pantry quotes said they accepted things after the best-by dates, up to a year.
Don’t get me wrong, a better person would have agreed to disagree and not kept on. He should have shut up about it before the mods came in. There’s a reason when I see a thread I disagree with, I say my peace and leave.
But I know I found myself more irritated by many of the replies to him than his posts themselves.
A correct read of the situation is: each food pantry has its own guidelines as to what they’ll take, and it’s best to ask them.
His position: canned food dates aren’t real and he eats expired food all the time and he’s fine, so nobody else should worry about it.
See the problem? He’s not engaging with the topic at issue, he’s trying to reduce a many-factored discussion to one narrow fact that he verified on Snopes or whatever. The hostility is justified and well-earned.
That’s it. The thread was about the best way to support a food pantry. There was lots of very useful information from people like myself who regularly donate to pantries, people who have relied on food pantries in the past and people who have worked at pantries. Then he, who has done none of these things, hijacked the thread with tangential bullshit. It was ruining the thread.
