DrDeth is Pitted Again

He’s now declared war on the Folks Pining for Francisco Franco thread.

Franco wasn’t really very bad. Or so DrD is pushing.

See here SDMB Search commencing at post 23.

Okay, that’s… Wow.

A long time ago I had a Spanish class entirely focused on the Spanish Civil War. I don’t remember a lot, but one of the key takeaways there was: Franco? Not a good dude.

Yes. The mid-20th century had several folks competing to be the worst person ever, but even the ones who didn’t manage to get to the top of the list were very bad people

Yeah, taking the Bronze (or even 4th runner up) in murderous asshole of the century is hardly a cause for admiration.

The real issue isn’t whether Francisco Franco is really bad, it’s…

Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition!

Anyone who makes it into the top 8 is awarded a dictatorial diploma.

The Spanish Inquisition is still dead.

Is that where the Deth in DrDeth comes in?

Nobody expects Generalissimo Francisco Franco?

He’s doing his typical patented DrDeth move of arguing with someone from country about that person’s own country.

I’m Zimbabwean, though I moved to South Africa over 25 years ago. I would not dare to argue South African history, because we did not study it at school. I know the basics, but no real details.

Ignorance is bliss, to a certain extent. But knowledge is so much more useful. Mr. Deth has apparently chosen the former.

There was this exchange in the Songs where performer and character are different genders thread:

He was told no, and rather than admitting his mistake he says this:

clears throat

Doc trotted out yet another convenient “friend” in the Fake Quebec Maple syrup thread.

You know, he probably does have a Canadian friend. Did he actually ask a friend about it, or just make that up? I dunno, but I’m willing to trust him on that one.

The article has photos of cans of syrup, if you were wondering what they look like. (Round, not like the square cans i sometimes saw as a kid.) And “syrup sometimes comes in cans” doesn’t strike me as the interesting part of the article. But whatever.

Perhaps but, with his reputation, he’d be better served by saying that he heard it somewhere and not bring up any friend.

With DD, it’s entirely possible the friend exists.

Of course, it’s also extremely likely DD has warped anything said friend has stated into something with only a nebulous connection with reality but will still assert this makes it the ‘only’ truth and one that is somehow representative of all other Canadians, even over (or especially) any Canadians who flatly contradict his 3rd or 4th hand (mis)interpretation

I agree with this. Just like when DD claims to have a source, that source will exist, but once that source is cited, it becomes clear that it actually states the opposite of what he claimed.

I don’t get it.

His post seems perfectly normal. Who are we to say he doesn’t have a Canadian friend?

A bunch of people do, ya know?

(Just looked, approx 800, 000 Canadians live in the US. And of course there are virtual friends)

And i travel to Canada from time to time, and Canadians travel to the US from time to time. I have many Canadian friends.

(I didn’t bother to reach out to them about how common canned syrup is, because… Why? But I’m sure i could if that were something i needed to know.)

It’s part of his tendency to rely on appeals to authority to bolster an opinion. For example: authors, his dad, his dad’s friends, and his own friends. IOW:
