I notice that guys who dress well but are relatively less attractive can still seem to get attractive women to date them. Let’s say I’m lazy as hell but want to get chicks, is simply dressing well the single easiest method of accomplishing this?
Cleaning-up helps, as does the impression that you are actively seeking and confident about it. The dressing well is just a proxy. It’s like a job interview!

More seriously, being well dressed and groomed is a huge thing. It’s the most obvious signal to women that you have your shit together. Absent other information, the guy who is groomed has at least shown competence in something, the poorly groomed person has shown no ability to even comb his own hair properly. There is also a tendency for folks who look down on themselves to reflect that in the way they dress.
No. Dressing for the situation, yes. Dressing in a smart suit or whatever, when it’s not necessary, can lead women to think you’re gay.
Back in my misspent college days, I saw particularly good results by listening and being funny. If I had had to dress well, I would have been celibate the entire time. Well, except for performance nights, when we wore tuxedos, but that’s just once or twice a semester.
Perhaps these men start by attracting the women, then dress up for their date.
I agree that simply dressing well isn’t the sine qua non of being a player, but also let’s not kid ourselves – there are plenty of guys who think they are being stylish when they wear their finest acid-washed jeans with those cool holes worn into them.

I can narrow it down even from a nebulous “dressing well.” 80% of it, IME, is good shoes and good hair.
I’d say this is a lot like giving presentations…dress for your audience.
If you want a lady who likes tattoo’d leather-wearing bike riding men…then dress that way.
If you want a lady who likes their men to dress up…then dress that way.
If you want a lady who likes you for who you are…then be you.
