DSL Connection Help

Hello all:
My DSL connection is down. I need help.

Symptoms: On the Nortel modem, the “Loop Status” indicator is either red or yellow which indicates that the modem is not in sync with the network. The IP address is some junk: 169.254.*. Pinging the default gateway or any IP address doesn’t work. nslookup doesn’t work.

I have tried the following:
(i) release and renew through ipconfig and windows interface. I get a message which says that the connection to DHCP server didn’t go through. Same symptoms continue
(ii) unplugging modem and plugging back in - again the IP address is initialized to 169.254.* Same symptoms continue.
(iii) shutting down, restarting - again modem is out of sync and the IP address is initialized to junk. Same symptoms.
(iv) manually setting IP address (what used to be my IP address) and DNS servers. While ipconfig’s output changes, the connection is still down. Same symptoms.

I am beginning to think the modem has gone kaput. But, the thing is the connection has been down before a few times for periods lasting a few hours with the same symptoms and eventually it came back on. I used to think it was a firewall issue (I have Zone Alarm installed) but now the connection has been down for over 40 hours with no hope in sight.

I am getting withdrawal symptoms. Please help.

(I am actually using AOL’s free trial period now… please warn me of any dangers as well)

I would call tech support  , if it happens intermittenly it’s most likely on their side. An IP address of 192.168.xxx.xxx is internally generated either my a router if you have one (if you do get rid of it for troubleshooting this problem) or by your computer. If you don’t have a router, that IP address means that the computer/modem is not being asigned an IP address by the ISP DHCP server. Assigning it your self won’t do any good in this case (in fact it will make troubleshooting REALLY hard if you don’t change it back to being automatically assigned). The only time you can set the IP address your self is when you are using a router with DHCP turned off. But that’s besides that point. I would suggest that you call tech support and let them take a look from their side.

It’s a campus town and tech support simply asked me to come and get a new modem on Monday!

I forgot to add that I don’t have a router. So, the 169.254* junk address must be assigned by the computer.

Thanks for responding. I am trying to find out if this indeed is a modem problem. In that case, I would have no choice but to wait until Monday but what if it is some other issue, I’d rather try and get it fixed now.

I hope you don’t mind me hijacking this thread. For a few months my DSL was interferiing with incoming calls, basically people weren’t able to get through to me on the phone. How common is this?

Robo99: You need a splitter plug. You should be able to get these at any phone place, though technically your modem supplier (or ISP) should’ve provided you with one for free.

Hey, yeah I’ve got those splitter plugs. There were still problems.
