Since I’ve begun letting the goatee grow longer (rather than religiously keeping it short / stubble-ish) I’ve gotten a lot more compliments on it. This is mostly to the fact that it looks much more full. I’ve got rather soft and fine facial hair so it needs length to make it look full, or so I am led to believe.
But I was just wondering what the dude dopers were sporting. Clean shaven? Mustache? Soul patch? Van Dyke? Full Beard? Sideburns? Mutton Chops? Goatee? Chin patch? Something else?
Pics a bonus. I’ll post one of me and mine when I get home tonight.
In practice, I really can’t be bothered shaving more than once a week or so, so I spend most of the time somewhere between five-o’clock-shadow and scruffy beard. Anyone who doesn’t like it is perfectly welcome to come and shave me themselves.
I’m sporting a goatee, and have for a couple of years now. Have worn a full beard many times. I’ve pretty much always had at least a mustache since I was old enough to shave. There were short exceptions if I was in a play that required a clean shaven look, and while I was in basic training.
I have poor and slow beard growth, so letting it grow is simply not an option. I didn’t shave for several weeks when I was in the hospital, and it just looked shittier each day, it never turned into an actual beard.
Clean shaven all the way for me… or at least it would be, if not the factors of slow growth and natural laziness combine to mean I shave about once a week or so if I don’t have reason to do it more often. This means I’m usually found with stubble.
Using the descriptions on barbershop.com/facialhair, I’d say I’m halfway between Van Dyke (with no 'stash), and Poet. I usually let my cheeks stay stubbly, and have basically adopted the style out of laziness.
I’m too lazy to shave regularly, but I should. When I go for a while without shaving, I look like Al Gore trying to grow a beard. Honest to God, Al Gore. It grows in all patchy and bad-looking. So I have no option to grow a beard. As a result, I have set up an appointment to have laser hair removal. I love the notion of never having to shave, but always looking like I just did. Besides, I hate the blue-gray look of stubble still under the skin. It makes the skin look dead.
Full beard and mustache here. I grew it out a few years ago while I was off work for a while and decided to keep it. I keep thinking about shaving it off, but I’d feel weird without it now. That’s me!
I’ve had a moustache since I was 14. For a number of years in my 20s I had a goatee, because that’s about the extent of the whiskers I can grow. Beyond my chin area, my facial hair grows too sparsely to even think about a beard. I can’t even grow sideburns. So for going on 20 years now I’ve been clean-shaven except for the moustache.
I have a full beard that I keep at about a week’s growth. I’ve had something, even down to sideburns, since I was old enough to grow it, except for a week this summer when I shaved my beard on a lark and realized that it’s probably a poor idea.
Depending on what kind of freedom I have as far as facial hair goes in my next gig, I was thinking about trying different styles in terms of the mustache or an impériale or something, but we’ll see.
I tried a full beard and 'stache once. It itched like mad, so I chopped it. Then I tried a goatee and kept that for a while, liking the bit of rebelliousness is portrayed. Then I met MindWife and the goatee had to go because she didn’t like facial hair. Oddly though, a couple of years back she had me try growing just a mustache. It earned me the nickname “70s pornstar” at work, and ultimately I was the one that wanted to get rid of it precisely because I really did end up looking like a 70s porn star. So now I’m clean-cut.
