dumb blondes? eheh..

I understand there are the unintelligent in every race, but it seems a lot more common and severe in blonde Caucasian girls…which is why we have the figure of speech “dumb blonde.”

What European country did the dumb blonde originate?..or is that just an American creation?

Not just an American creation, but a Southern Californian creation, t’boot! And we’re damn proud of it?

(What? You never heard the expression “Valley Girl”?)

Wow. My second exclamation point has a bad back and has curled over, like a question mark. Interesting, innit?

Methinks ditzy blondes predate Valley Girls by a few years - I’m thinking about old B&W movies whose titles escape me. Of course, those were made in southern CA, right?

My unprofessional, unresearched guess, tho, goes along these lines:

  • many young children start out as blonde
  • young children are innocent and naive
  • therefore, blondes must be innocent and childlike
  • dyed blondes are pretending to be innocent and childlike, and that comes across as dumb

I know I didn’t express it well, but it’s way too early in the morning. However, the logic is clear to me. Maybe that’s how the stereotype was born??

IMHO…

Blonde women are seen as more sexually attractive.
Sexually attractive women are percieved as dumber, since they don’t need brains to get by.
Blonde woman are percieved as dumber.

QED.

Theory: attractive women are more likely to be promoted beyond their level of competence than other people. Therefore, one will find a higher percentage of attractive women who are not capable of performing their jobs than you will of other people. Hence the stereotype (which is an exageration, as are most stereotypes).

They started a country?

Another possibility for the origin is that there are more blonde women than blonde men (or if there aren’t, then it seems that way to me and probably some others, too) so that blondeness gets associated with femininity, which is already associated with dumbness.

Please, please. My experience is that the “dumb” blondes are all brunettes who moved to California and dyed their hair.

But according to Muttrox

So, in summary, people who like blondes are secretly pedophiles? I wondered about that.

I blame hollywood, they make it look like dumb, blonde women have more fun, so blonde women who are not very smart play up on their dumbness, whereas not so smart women with different coloured hair play down their dumbness.

The important point to consider is that most humans are pretty dumb, some just get more out of life by being dumb.

I don’t understand the question.

Yeah, but it’s located in South America.

Does anyone know how far back the stereotype goes? e.g, does it predate Marilyn Monroe? I’d think that would go a long way toward answering where it came from.

This is an unfounded and cruel stereotpype, not a reality. The OP seems to suggest otherwise.

BTW, I am neither blonde nor female.

If this is isolated to the U.S., I’d say that blondes are less common than redheads or brunettes and thus, a greater ‘prize’ for men. With more men fighting over them, many blondes might learn early on that all they have to do is be cute and bubbly and someone will give them whatever they want. Thus there’s really no incentive for them to study or excel in anything other than their appearance.

I’d be curious to see if Sweden, Norway or some other predominantly blond society has a myth about dumb brunettes (Of course, I’m basing my knowledge of Sweden and Norway on certain dreams I have had in the past…)

FTR, I’m blond and my two smartest friends are blondes.

A creul stereotype? huh?

blonde walks into a library thinkin it’s mcdonalds.
librarian asks “how may i help you.”
blonde says “hi a burger, fries and a coke please”
librarian says “what? this is a library”
blonde whispers “o sorry, i’ll take a burger fries and a coke.”

“It isn’t so much that blonde women are dumb. It’s just that so many dumb women choose to be blonde!”

(Disclaimer: I know lots of very smart blonde women, but I can’t resist playing with the stereotype.)

And I’m going to give this a shot. My candidate is Marie Wilson, an actress that did films and radio from the 30’s through the 50’s. From 1947 to 1954, she did a radio series called “My Frend Irma.” This site doesn’t give much information about the show, but says Wilson “epitomized the dumb blonde (and was probably the first actress to intentionally play one.”

This site also describes the radio character as “possibly the kookiest secretary in the entire world. She was friendly, enthusiastic, sexy, and very wacky. She just had no sense of logic.”

So, when she went on to do two movies based on the same character in 1949 and 1950, the audience then had a chance to wed the persona of a known radio character with the presentation. Which was the “quinntessential dumb, buxom blonde.”

At the same time, Judy Holliday starred in the movie “Born Yesterday” (1950) which may have further welded that association of blonde and dumb (although her character turns out to be much smarter than first perceived). And Marilyn Monroe did the dim-bulb starlet bit in “All About Eve” the same year. All of these may have paved the way for the Jayne Mansfield/Mamie Van Doren characters that came a few years later (mid 50’s) to permanently tie blonde=dumb (=sex).

Or I could just be having a blonde moment.

Is this really so? I would have thought that it was the other way around in the US. Maybe I’m just not well-traveled enough, though.

Isn’t blonde hair a trait of having more Estrogen than an equivalent brunette. Maybe this does have an effect on how intelligent a blonde is?
