dumb question about tonight's Family Guy

If you saw it, you might know the part I’m talking about: they’re out on a boat searching for a certain infamous fish. An odd character is seen saying, basically, in an odd voice, “Fish, fish, where is the fish?” I am absolutely sure that this is a parody of something (as everything on FG is), but I can’t recall where it’s from. Now it’s bothering me. Did anyone see the episode and know what I’m talking about?

P.S. …

I’m thinking it might be a Monty Python thing or something like that. Anyone?

Could you be thinking of these scenes from Monty Python’s Life of Brian?

I wonder where that fish has gone?
And it went whereever I did go

Yeah, that seems to be it.

By the way, that “Stolen Bandwidth” deal is pretty impressive, isn’t it?

I haven’t seen the episode yet (I’m on the west coast, so it’s not on for another 50 minutes or so…) but it sounds to me an awful lot like some of the silly episode introductory scenes in Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.

I’m reconstructing this entirely from memory, but as a kind of transition between their skits of “the meaning of life,” one for birth (where the great Every Sperm is Sacred song appears) one for death and several other life milestones in between, a guy with absurdley long arms comes out waving his arms in weird right angles, and says something like “Where’s the fish” or maybe even “Fish, fish, where’s the fish.” He uses a high-pitched voice with an extra long “eeeee” instead of the “i” (feeeeesh).

I certainly have never been able to make any sense or derive any larger meaning from this little episode (if anyone would care to explain the joke to me, go right ahead), but your description of the quote from The Family Guy reminded me of it immediately.

Very funny show, by the way.

Oops, I didn’t realize the website I linked to doesn’t like direct links to their wav files. You’ll have to click on the third link in my earlier post, and then click on the WAVs there.

Off to the Cafe with you.

In yesterday’s USA TODAY, there was a story about Seth McFarland, the creator of FAMILY GUY (he also does the voice of the father, Peter). Seems he was supposed to be on the flight that crashed into the first World Trade Tower, but didn’t make the flight because his travel agent gave him the wrong takeoff time. Weird.

Yes, richardb, that is definitely it, as the guy in the cartoon was doing the right angles with his arms as well. I had asked a friend of mine (after posting here), and he did remind me that we had seen it in a Python bit a while back.
