I know we always get an influx of summer vacation interns of idiocy around this time of year but I don’t recall this particular approach being so prevalent.

I think most of it is due to the fact that the Mods won’t toss these tossers the second they show up. Any other message board would ban them within 5 minutes. Here we don’t, and that’s why they’re noticable.

What would be cool would be a vBulletin hack where a Mod could, when one of these tossers shows up, lock his thread and delete all answers without it showing that way to anyone. Let them think that no-one took their bait (impossible) or that they are going crazy because there used to be responses, but now there are none. Call it an Idiot Tag or something.

Occasionally they’ll come up with a piece of inanity that you hadn’t encountered before and which you can add to your personal archive of stupidity. And knocking down their flimsy bullshit helps keep your mental antiwoo muscles in good trim.

For the “don’t feed the trolls!” posters - are you overwhelmingly concerned that by responding, we will use up all the bandwidth required for attaining world peace? Just don’t open the threads. Go for a nice 3-mile run, donate money to curing uncontrollable intestinal gas, watch a candidates’ debate or something.

I’m pretty sure that’s essentially what’s happened to brazil84 in the racism Pit thread. He’s “banned” everyone else who was talking in the thread, and now he’s sitting around, wondering why no one else is responding. Soon he’ll decide that he defeated us all, declare victory, and go throw himself a party.

As to the OP, hell yes. I was just about to come in here and start a “WTF is going on around here lately??!” thread.

I suspect one crazy thread gets indexed by google, which attracts a bunch of other crazies to the board when they search for stuff about “the truth about 9/11” or other such phrases. Then they start their own crazy threads, and the cycle continues.

Obviously this process will continue to snowball, and the SDMB will be nothing but racists and truthers by the end of the year.
