E-bay feedback question- hide your purchases?

I am an E-bay buyer and seller, and recently I’ve come across an item that I can buy cheap cheap and for whatever reason resell for about 5x the the original cost. I just bought a lot of this item, and I’d rather if my potential customers didn’t know that I bought them for $1 when they are happily paying $5 for it (especially when the seller I bought from is listed right there in the feedback).

So short of hiding all of your feedback, can you make the item # of what you bought or sold non-clickable? It seems an invasion of privacy to me for all of your bought and sold items to be listed right there for all to see in your feedback. It seems like it would be enough for the person to know how the transaction went, not what exactly you bought or sold.

Any idea on how to do this?

Log in into your account. In the left column, there should be a “Feedback forum” link under “Related Links”.

Under “Useful links”, you’ll see a “hide my feedback” link. There you can change your feedback from public to private.

But the problem there is that then no one can see your feedback at all- I just don’t want for people to see WHAT I bought or sold- the comments and such I’d like to keep visable.

True. It’s a all-for-one deal, unfortunately.

Perhaps you could create a buy-only screen name?

The odds are that few people will look to see what you’ve bought. Mostly they’ll just make sure your feedback is good and not feel any interest in investigating further. However, rest assured that a few will go to the trouble—someone always will.

Mr. Blue Sky offers a good suggestion—I’ve created a different eBay identity for the purchasing of items that I don’t want nosy people finding out about. That won’t help you now, though, alas!

My suggestion would be to wait a little while, until the cheap purchases you’ve made are farther down in your eBay feedback list. At least 10 feedbacks down. Very few people are nosy enough to check that far back. Better to keep your feedback visible, and risk a few nosy people seeing what you’ve bought, than to hide your feedback. People will really wonder about you then.

If a seller hasn’t had a legitimate negative in the past 6 months, I rarely look any further.

Thanks for the advice- I hadn’t thought of it until I already did the transaction, unfortunately. I should have bought with my friends ID. I’m not ripping anyone off or anything, but I was hoping I could buy my large lot without everyone and their brother knowing how much I paid. Ah well- live and learn!

eBay doesn’t care if you have multiple names, as long as the contact info is correct on all of them. (I have one for most of my buying and selling, one for discussion boards, and one for buying stuff that I don’t want nosy people seeing.) A lot of people use separate IDs for buying and selling.

I’ve been in similar situations. What I’ve found is that if most sellers won’t leave feedback unless the buyer leaves feedback first. Now, this is contrary to the notion of feedback - at that point all the work of the buyer is done and the seller should have given feedback after confirming payment - many still hold out to make sure they get positive feedback first.

What I’ll do when planning to resell, is to not give any feedback, positive, negative, or neutral, and usually the seller will do the same.

Hehe, I’m one of those nosy people.

Me too, which is why the thought struck me!
