Early 80s Nickelodeon Cartoon Identification?

LOL! No problem- I was cursing myself after I posted it because I sang it ALL NIGHT LONG!

Man, I loved You Can’t Do That On Television when I was a kid. I had a huge crush on the girl that played Moose. Anyone know what happened to her? Also, if they said “water”, water would come pouring down as well. Great fun. And Barth… “Who do you think’s iiiinn the burger?”

Danger Mouse was the shit. Enlish shit, with a cool car and a funny sidekick.

MCOG was a family favorite in the morning. I wonder if you can find them on Ebay?

Yeah, Out of Control* had, I thought, the guy that went on to be the annoying comedian on Full House. Or was that another Dave?

And damn you all.

Now I have the song from “Eureka’s Castle” in my head…

At least it wasn’t David the Gnome. That show annoyed me…

MCOG has never been released on tape or on DVD in english. The only legal release is a French-only DVD set.

Here is a link to download full episodes of You Can’t Do That on Television.

To add to what mblackwell said. After I saw that Tristan was wondering if it was on eBay I looked for it. Found it actually too, but I didn’t post about it earlier because the tapes didn’t smell legal to me. Based on their description folks had probably taped them off TV and were selling bootleg English copies that way. One seller, from Australia I believe, was brazen enough to say that after payment arrived it would take a week to make the copy and send it on. Ugh. Pirates are everywhere.

Now I never saw MCOG, but based on what I’ve been reading here it sounds intriguing. Maybe if the relevant portions of this tape were printed and sent to Nick they would consider re-running it?

What, no mention of *Belle and Sebastian[/i}? I think I watched that one a little more than MCOG (though that one was excellent as well). Belle and Sebastian was similar in style, a foreign-produced cartoon serial, this one centering on the adventures of a young boy (Sebastian) and his dog (Belle) who carried on an endless search for Sebastian’s mother, whom I believe he was finally reunited with in the final episode.

Oh, those animated song shorts, I’d love to find the one they used to show for the song “Your Feets Too Big”. Funny and a cool song. They had another of a rockabilly instrumental song with mice taking over a house and throwing a party. Primitive animation, but the song was great.

A favorite memoryof mine is my sister and I singing along to “Fishheads” everytime it came on TurkeyTV, my mother convinced we had both gone mad. THey also ran those George Carlin comedy bits from "Carlin On Campus"with his trademark language bleeped out, how they ever got that on I’ll never know.

When it came to YCDTOTV, I remember having a crush on Lisa Ruddy, wide hips, whiny voice, and all. I hated Alasdair because he looked just like this jerk I knew about the same time. According to the IMDB, as of 2000 Christine “Moose” McGlade is a producer for a kids show called “Playground” on CTV in Canada.

Wow, I feel out of place. I’m one of the younger Dopers and I watched Nick from 1989-94 or 95. I don’t remember Pinwheel or The Little Prince and I have very vague recollections of You Can’t Do That On Television (and the slime). I do remember David the Gnome (thanks for the link Casey, I’ve been trying to name that show for years), Noozles, Eureka’s Castle, Salute Your Shorts, Welcome Freshman, Double Dare, What Would You Do, and Hey Dude (which I absolutely hated. That blonde chick was too perky). I remember in the summer, every afternoon, I’d sit through Lassie to watch Looney Toons and Underdog repeats. And every night, right before Nick at Nite (when the channel became “for grown-ups” ), they’d show Rocky and Bullwinkle.

I have better memories of Nick’s programming when they started Snick and Nicktoons: Are You Afraid of the Dark, Ren and Stimpy, Doug, All That (back when the cast was actually funny), Rugrats. My dad loved Ren and Stimpy more than I did and watched with me before church on Sundays. (Talk about family bonding :D) I didn’t really like Doug too much until I was 8 or 9. All That was funny just for Vital Information (Lori Beth Demberg does it better than anyone since. She just says random stuff like, “it’s good to pick on your friends, it’s not good to pick your friends’ noses” like it happens everyday)and for Good Burger (which, like many SNL sketches, didn’t translate into a good movie, but that’s another thread). Everyone said AYAOTD wasn’t scary, but you were scared anyway:) . All in all, good times.

And then there was the ultimate coolness. I was the biggest Inspector Gadget fan. I even watched it in Spanish a few times! Clarissa Explains It All was just so cool. Every girl in my 1st grade class wanted to be her. And no one will ever beat The Adventures of Pete and Pete. That was the best show ever. You colud never outgrow it; the more you were about how bizarre the show was, the more you loved it.

In my opinion, Nick really started to go downhill about 1995 or 1996. Rocko’s Modern Life was the last good Nicktoon; they’ve gotten worse since then. (Invador Zim? Spongebob? Fairly Oddparents is tolerable in small doses, but not more than 15 minutes of it) They’ve taken most the good shows (heck, even the okay ones-I admit to liking Weinerville) off the air. The only two good show on now have been tossed in the insinerator. Rugrats has developed into a franchise-as soon as the backpacks stop selling, they introduce another character. All That isn’t funny. At all. Even Amanda Bynes was better than the current cast (cause her redeeming grace was her Ashley bit). What is wrong with these people?

I have a theory: They decided that kids are dumb. Virtually all the shows that have been mentioned had one thing in commom: they treated their audience as a bunch of smart kids. Sure, they wouldn’t grasp everything adults do, but they didn’t have to lower the bar down to potty humor for laughs. They also were creative. Half the shows would have gone nowhere creators didn’t let their imagination fly.

So there. I know that was long, but I’ve been waiting for a chance to talk about old Nickelodeon.

Nothing, I mean NOTHING, will ever top Count Duckula.

Banana Man beats Duckula any day of the week. And so does Dangermouse. Even Penfold could beat Duckula.

And I discover it was probably my fate to be a pathetic anime otaku, since two of my favorite shows as a child (Noozles and Grimm’s Fairy Tales) were made in Japan. Probably before I was even aware Japan was a country. Figures. I just liked them for the weirdness anyway. And koalas are darn cute.

Oooh, I loved David the Gnome! I always thought Lil Bits was a poor imitation. David was so… soothing, somehow.

I didn’t really like a lot of cartoons as a child. These and Darkwing Duck are the only ones I wanted to see with any regularity. Now I’m more fond of cartoons, since I don’t have to try to act mature and impress the adults… I am the adults!

Blasphemer.

LunaSea, you have clearly NOT watched episodes as classic as “Town Hall Terrors”.

You will repent when you see the exploits on “Planet Cute”.

Mark my words.

YES!!! Wasnt it a show on PBS with puppets or something…and they had a reading club, that was their secret phrase?

Count Duckula was one of the greatest things ever!

…where’s the Danger Mouse love? “Penfold!”

Just posting to spread the YCDTOTV love. I credit that show with teaching me about stuff like identity crises, having priorities, and being optimistic/pessemistic.

sigh Nothing like old school Nick.

Oh Crumbs!

For me, Dangermouse went downhill after they started running Bananaman bits with it. I loved DM, but detested Bananaman.

I was at the Mall the other day and I saw a Dangermouse t-shirt at “Goth-n-Go” (Hot Topic). Only my cashless status kept the Evil Outlet from getting some of my money.
