Early Notice--Holidope in Monroe, MI, Dec 29

After almost two-and-a-half years here on the boards and about a year hanging out with the marvelous Michidopers (band name!), I’ve decided to take the plunge and (gulp) host my very own Dopefest.

I thought it would be great fun to get together at my house in beautiful(ish) Monroe, Michigan in between Christmas and New Year’s. All Dopers and their SO’s, of course, are welcome.

My family has okayed the use of our home on the afternoon/evening/night of December 29. I thought this date would be best because:

A) It’s a Saturday, so travel (Depending on how fast you go, we’re about 1 hour from Ann Arbor and Detroit Metro, 2 hours from East Lansing, and maybe 3 hours from Flint) can happen on largely work-free days. Many of you (at least the Michidopers whose locations I know) would probably be able to drive home that night, barring wild drunkenness, in which case we take away your keys and find somewhere to put you for the night.

B) We can destress after another maddening Christmas (or Hanukkah or Yule or Winter Solstice…it’s called Holidope because it’s all-inclusive!) and warm up for the New Year’s Eve celebrations the next week. Perfect timing!

Features of this Dopefest will include:

Secret family recipe Hooch! (I can only tell you about the rose hips, the scotch, and the cider…after that I have to kill you.)

Fabulous wassail for the non-drinkers and the designated drivers!

Copious food and other drinks! (Festive menu contributions welcome.)

A genial holiday atmosphere!

The delightful company of your fellow Dopers!

Because of a family compromise, I’m afraid that I can’t offer places to crash at my house, but there are convenient hotels at the next I-75 exit (Holiday Inn Express, Cross-Country Inn, Days Inn) that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. Also, the lovely tsarina lives in Monroe and her parents might be bigger suckers than mine are.

So mark your calandars and come celebrate the holidays, Doper-style!

I am so there. I’m only minutes away from General George Custer’s adopted hometown.

I’m sorry, but I’m just not able to find a reason for me to miss this. Hope you don’t mind, but I’m pretty certain I can show up to help trash the joint.

Dude, Monroe is the hometown of General Custer. An additional reason to come! GAZE! at the big statue! VISIT! the museum! GAWK! at the house! Come one, come all!

Well, technically I guess it may be, he did spend most of his life there, but Custer was born in New Rumley, Ohio in 1839, about 80 miles south-south-east of Cleveland. Ppplllllbbbbbtttt.

::hands over ears::
LALALALALALALA!!! I can’t hear you!!!

Persephone, you know I’m going to hold you to that, right? We’ve got it in writing, everyone’s seen it.

Hmm…last year I did this and I almost died in a fantabulous blizzardy snow-storm.

Well, I guess I’ll play this one by ear and keep an eye on the Weather Channel.

You’re proud of Custer??? By all accounts, he was a royal jackass… oh, I get it.

I’m in. But that is a bit of a drive for me (close to 4 hours), especially in winter. Last year’s meet was fun, but I’m not looking forward to a repeat of the weather…

Yeah, the weather has the potential to suck. We’ll all just have to keep an eye on conditions and hope no one calls up a huge f*cking blizzard or something.

Persephone, don’t you Pagan people have some kind of pull with whatever it is that makes the weather? Make a note to look into that.

Even though I haven’t been posting here too long, I’ve been lurking for a pretty long time. If things go well here with me, I’d be up for my first Dopefest! I’m about an hour north of flint…

I’m interested in attending too. I’m only an hour away from Monroe. Like others have said, it will depend on the weather though. The last time I attended a Michigan Dopefest in the winter, we had a major blizzard and the drive was pretty bad. As long as the weather holds up that day, then I should be able to attend.

Hey, me too.

:checking profile:

I think this guy’s literally my next door neighbor!

You live on Grant Street, don’t you? Next to a beige duplex?

AHHHH! They found me!
runs

The link to your racing page tipped it off. It’s hard to miss that car sitting on a trailer in your driveway.

Looks like you have a ride if you want one, bud… but after feeling my walls vibrate from someone’s bass next door one too many times, be aware that I’m picking the music. :stuck_out_tongue:

You know, this is slightly disconcerting. I never really talk to my neighbors (other than occasionally with the couple in the other side of the duplex), and now I meet one here. Very weird. Hell, I’ve even had your mail delivered to me a couple times.

Wow. The Straight Dope Message Board. Bringing people together as only a welding torch can.

Loud Bass? Why, I have no idea what you’re talking about! I try to keep it in mind to turn down that thing when I get in the neighborhood, I forget sometimes though. As for that poor racecar, that thing is bent up pretty bad. It should be in the garage but I don’t feel like taking it off the trailer…ahwell.

You’re right, this is pretty scary. I don’t talk to neighbors either…

Which side of the duplex are you on anyways?

I’m on the side nearest you, which I why I get the full effect from the bass… or those Saturdays when you guys are tuning up the car.

It’s not very often; I’m just giving you a hard time. It’s much better than when I lived in an apartment complex in GR and had noises from directly above…

I drive that red Silverado, and you’ve probably seen me mowing the lawn (but not lately).

Well, I think we’ve successfully hijacked this thread. All of this while I’m in class “paying attention” Looks like I’ll be going to a dopefest afterall!

Hijack? You should know that recruitment for Juniper’s next vict… er… I mean visitor, is the implicit purpose of this thread.

[sub]Am I doing a good job, my master?[/sub]

Excellent, my pet. Now it’s back into the lab with you. Or do I need to get out the belt sander? That’s what I thought.

So, Newbster…glad to have you on board. I think you’ll find this gathering…quite interesting. [sub][sup]toss me that bottle of ether on your way out, mrblue[/sub][/sup]

Heh heh heh
