Easy Rider Question: Captain America and Billy

I’m sitting here watching Easy Rider, and I’ve long been mystified by what Dennis Hopper said when they were thrown into jail for parading without a permit. He said something like “This is Captain America, and I’m Billy! We play every circus in the country-and for top dollar!” Something like that. What on earth is he talking about?
Thanks,

The characters had a backstory that they were stunt riders. Also, I think he said “state fair,” not “circus.”

Huh. That’s interesting. I don’t doubt you, but I’m a huge fan of this movie, and I never picked up on that, although now that you’ve said that, it does clear a couple of things up. Did Dennis Hopper say something like this in a commentary, or did they allude to it in the movie.

I always thought that Billy was just trying to bullshit his way out of jail, and not doing a very good job.

Yes, it was on the commentary. They decided not to allude to it in the movie, on the grounds that it would be better if you didn’t know the guys’ background at all, positive or negative.
