Eccles is dead

hi freckles!

besure to keep your new human in line by doing crazy cat at 1am.

watch out for the gnomes!

Chowder, I’m sorry about Eccles. Yea for the new kitten, though. (Lost my cat three months ago; ready for a new kitty.)

Hello, Freckles! We’re looking forward to hearing about your adventures with chowder!

Welcome Freckles! You have an excellent new home, and you’ll be famous on this board.

It sounds like he’s up to the task of being The Cat. Congrats on your new addition!

Congrats! It is so nice to hear you got a kitten.

Exactly. He went from an abandoned kitty that probably wouldn’t have lasted the week, never mind the winter, to a loved cat that lived to that grand age of sixteen.

I’ll give my cat, Tommy, an extra special hug in Eccles’ memory.

Hello dopers, Freckles here, pleased to meet you all.

Well, my first opinion of my new pets place is a good one altho’ there are obvious alterations to furniture required.

It appears the late feline occupant of Chowder Towers had absolutely no knowledge of a cats obligations to scratch, claw and in general create an utter mess of highly polished surfaces, this will be rectified just as soon as my feet, sorry, paws are firmly under the table.

Chowder himself seems a decent sort but again some training is required…I mean what sort of cat would I be if I allowed him to doze in the armchair as and when he sees fit.

I reckon a swift clout across the chops (claws sheathed, for now, should do the trick.

Anyway, my new pet is watching the football so I have to disturb him, catch you later

Awwww.

chowder, one thing that worked with a previous cat I helped care for was to simply bring in a two-foot length of log with the bark still on and set it upright in a convenient spot. It seemed to provide a more satisfactory scratching surface than the furniture was.

Cats being cats, however, YMMdecidedlyV.

How did I miss this thread? I’m sorry you lost Eccles; it sounds like he had a really good run, though.

And yay for Freckles! Kittens are awesome.

When I get home I will snuggle my Sapphire in Eccles’ honor.

The Cat is dead - long live the Cat!

Kitty K curtsys and goes back to sleep.

It was strange waking this morning without being confronted by Eccles about 2" from my face purring like a 2 stroke.

Anyway, I got up and fed Freckles, he’d had a small whoopsie in his litter tray, he’s a little beauty.

I’ll wait a while until I let him sleep on the bed like Eccles used to, wouldn’t want an accident would I?

Having had time to think I got to wondering what caused Eccles’ death?

Was it just his age?

Did his heart just run down the clock?

He’d not been sick or anything altho’ he was less inclined to mess about that he used to do, you know chasing balls of paper and stuff. He’d been off his food a couple of times over the last 2 weeks but I figured that was normal for a cat his age and once or twice he never scuttled into the kitchen at the sound of the fridge door being opened…which he allus did.

Heck, he could hear the fridge door opening across the road.

Right, have to get to the pet stores pick up a scratching post and some other stuff.

In the words of Arnie “I’ll be back”

Sorry for your loss, Chowder. Your OP made me a little bit weepy and I had to pause and give my Spotty McGotty (he’s clearly scottish, not english :P) a hug. Welcome to you new kitteh overlord, Freckles!

Aww Im so sorry Chowder. People underestimate the love and attachment our pets bring us. I hope Eccles is safe and happy up in cat heaven. He may meet Casper, my cat who died last year. I’m sure they will be good friends.

My guess is that it was just his time. 15 years is a good long life for a cat. Obviously you took very good care of him for him to live that long. It might have been his heart, maybe his kidneys were failing, but I would bet that his body just wore out some way.

You’re probably right Lynn altho’ he had never displayed any signs of sickness but he did seem a tad lethargic at times, as if everything was just to much trouble

When I went to bed he normally would trundle in about 10 minutes later, hop on the bed and just crash out without so much as a “good night you old sod”

The night he died I thought it a bit odd that he never showed up but didn’t give it much thought.

As for taking care of him, over the years that cat cost me a fortune, money I’m glad I spent.

Ah well, that’s that, one book closed, another opened.

Apologies for raising a zombie thread.

My new cat (BTW I called him James, not Freckles) has been in the wars over the last few weeks.

He’s not a bit like Eccles was, James is a nasty bad tempered sod,he attacks all and everything and invariably comes come with bits of him missing and to be frank with you I’m getting a bit pissed off.

I’ve had him at the vets, his tripes have been seen to but still he’s a grouchy bastard.

The vet tells me that some cats are just naturally like that and there’s bugger all I can do about it other than live with it.

Bullshit I say, there must be something I can do to calm him down- so I appeal to the doper community for ideas.

Is he neutered? At his age, he’s like a teenage boy, and we all know how testy they can be.

My daughter’s cat was a PITA until she stopped letting him go outside. Whenever he came back, he acted either like he’d been on a bender (“Leave me alone, dammit!”) or had been partying with the local meth heads (“Where’s your ankle? I need to bite an ankle, now!”). Maybe he ate some bad stuff or maybe there was just too much stimulation in the wild, but he didn’t settle down until he became an indoor cat. YMMV, of course.
