Ed, WTF?

Do you think Colibri pulled that out of his arse?

I’m am accepting Colibri’s interpretation of the phrase in a Latin American context, I still don’t see the threat. Do you?

No, but I think he did grossly misinterpret Sapo’s intent.

No wonder it was sore.

rimshot

The bottom line is that instead of taking Sapo to task for being a jerk, Ed chose to find a threat in something that was not a threat. That’s unacceptable.

Hey, when you’re right, you’re right.

No, probably not. But it does little to discourage the impression of a hyper-sensitive 7 year old girl.

:smack: I lost sight of the primary issue.

I just love the fact that a man having sex with another man is considered an insult worthy of a fucking knife fight…at least if you’re the catcher anyway. There are a lot of things that would insult me but an insinuation that I’ve taken it in the pooper would merit a smirk at best. I thought that Ed’s warning was a ridiculous overreaction. I had no idea.

Did Ed know all of this when he made the warning to Sapo? If so, how did Ed learn of it? Since it’s not obvious to any of us who don’t live in Latin America, did you write out all of this context and history for Ed? Did you do so when you brought the post up to the mods?

If any employee (yes, I know you’re not employed) took the time to write this much about a simple interaction, the boss would probably think the employee was pretty aggrieved and might try to help them out, whether or not the employee was right.

One would think that if you didn’t like being abused in the Pit, you wouldn’t make taunting remarks in a Pit thread that wasn’t addressed to you.

It seems a little incongruous that once a mod (you) makes taunting remarks to someone who was not addressing them in the Pit that the mod can then hide behind a rule that mods don’t have to take abuse that they’ve just dished out.

Eat shit. Fuck off.

I rather agree with the person who asserted that this is an English-language message board, and the fact that a particular word or phrase becomes more offensive when directly translated to another language shouldn’t inform Board policy, but that’s just my opinion. Still, noting what you say below…

…perhaps it is time to clamp down on insults, between members as well as between members and moderators. I like to think we’re a better message board than that, and calling each other out like middle school kids trying to act tough really isn’t worthwhile. I think, also, up until six or seven years ago, there was a lot more insulting and namecalling going on around here. If somebody complained or even asked about a moderator’s decision in the Pit, there were members who would flame the OP to a degree which is almost never seen today. I shouldn’t wonder if this contributed to the moderators’ objection to junior modding, because that’s what a lot of it was. I’m glad things aren’t like that now. If the administration wants to create a more civil atmosphere around here, I’m all for it.

Not decreasing your rep as whiny. Not one bit. If this was a Latino board in Latin America, you might have a leg to stand on, but as someone who posts on an American board from a foreign country, I can assure you that the only standard used here is the one of the US. No one gives the slightest little rat’s hiney what insults are used in Canada, and they don’t care what they are in whatever country you’re talking about here. Weak. So very, very weak.

Exactly.

Fucking hoser.

d&r’s

Err, well, I was kinda thinking that the person insulting you would be the one that you were taunting, but hey, knock yourself out.*

Unless of course, that was a threat in which case I’d have to report it to the mod team. But how would I do that since I’m not a mod, and they’re the only ones who seem to be protected under this old (convoluted by 100% for this interpretation) rule?

*which in English means to enjoy yourself; it doesn’t literally mean to physically hurt yourself. I hope I don’t have to explain every colloquial term for English interpretation just in case someone might interpret it in Moon language or something.

Sapo and Colibri both live in Latin America, and what Colibri said is true. (It led to a pretty grave misunderstanding between myself and a girl from Baja California I once dated. I’m quite serious.) Just because you lack cross-cultural perspective doesn’t mean that other cultures’ concepts of dominate, aggressive language aren’t different from ours. In this case, it’s like asking an acquaintance how much his mother enjoyed your ejaculate, but probably more so.

Just how dense are you? Colibri and Sapo share a language and (largely) a culture, foreign to most of the SDMB.

That said, this whole “threat” thing is a stretch, and it doesn’t show any of the three players in the best light.

To be fair, it’s just as grave an insult if a man says it to a woman.

…As it turns out. :frowning:

So if you came at a (hypothetical?) Canadian mod with something considered a grave insult in Canada but mildly abrasive in the US, what would you expect that mod to do?

Hostile Dialect,
Hostile Dialect, Narcissist

I must admit I was not aware that using the term “Butthurt?” would cause someone to pull a knife on me in Latin America. You may now consider my “cross-cultural perspective” greatly enhanced by my new understanding of the homophobic machismo that appears to run rampant in the Latin world.*

Seriously, read the posts above. Do we really need new rules to cover when two people of the same “culture” insult each other? This is not Latin America, it’s the Dope; Dope rules should apply, not some “you have insulted my honour, I shall now challenge you to a duel” bullshit. It’s ridiculous.

Was Sapo pushing buttons? Probably. But since he was provoked, he had every right to “fight back” (figuratively, people). So even if he was aware that “Butthurt?” was a slap in the face (figuratively) to his Latin comrade, that doesn’t change the fact that Colibri’s response was pathetic.
*FYI - this is a joke.

I haven’t been following every bit of SDMB drama lately, because I have better things to do. I can’t remember the rule invoked, and I can’t be arsed to backtrack and find out, but, no, apparently some other rule covered this situation just fine. Or so Little Ed says, but, unfortunately, we’ve found out that that’s the same thing.
