I’m hoping I can opt out of the mobile chnages. The VB browser UI works fine on my iPad and other sites that have converted to a ‘mobile UI’ really, really suck. Mobile should mean small device size, not mobile OS…
I plan on using the distraction of the update to stage a relatively bloodless coup and become president for life of the SDMB.
Now that Ed has announced the upgrade, I guess I can finally say that we (the moderators) were allowed to play around with some of the proposed changes on one of the test sites. We haven’t seen the final version that will be rolled out during the upgrade, but what I saw actually worked pretty well.
The changes that we saw weren’t dramatic, so if you are afraid that this will totally screw up how the SDMB is displayed on your mobile device you don’t need to worry about that. It’s just some tweaks in font size and such to make things much more readable.
On a desktop, the changes were minimal. On my android tablet and my android phone, the pages were much more readable, but still had the same basic look and feel.
Like I said, we didn’t get to see the final product, so I’m waiting to see what we get as much as you are, but if it’s like what we were allowed to experiment with, the changes for the mobile devices were definitely for the better (IMHO).

As far as I can tell, not many changes are needed for that. The website already dynamically resizes. It would just some meta to tell the mobile web browsers that it’s okay to let the page dynamically resize, instead of forcing it to 1024x768 resolution.
Though maybe they’d need to make the ads fit.
I find it hard to plan given I don’t know what time zone this is. I mean, as an east coaster I’m barely aware of the other time zones as it is given how infrequently I ever need to convert 'em.
