How do I stop spending all my time here?

OK, I’m just a guest, and I’ve only been here for the past week or so, but these boards are frickin’ great!

The problem is, I can’t stop! This is like the greatest cocktail party ever. (And without alcohol, to boot!) Lots of erudite people, armed with loads of information, talking with authority about lots of slightly offbeat, some inane, but usually pretty interesting topics. I’m getting next to zero work done.

I don’t think I’ll join up as a member when my free trial stops. (I know I can still look at the boards without a membership, but it would kill me to do that and not be able to post.)

That is, unless someone pretty convincingly tells me how I can limit my knowledge Jones to let’s say, an hour a day.

BTW, this is not a serious thread. If a mod feels the need to move it/close it, go right ahead. Just wanted to express how much I’m enjoying myself here. (Too much!)

Don’t fight it! Join usssssssss.

Bwahaha!

This place is worse that addicting…it’s useful. Many’s the time I’ve been stumped on something and brought it here.

Hell, Lady Chance even says ‘I dunno…go ask the Dopers’ when we’ve got a thorny issue and she’s not even one of us.

It’s a great community and well worth the dough.

I suspect you’ll find that you taper off after a while. I spend a lot of down-time here but less when things are busy. You’re just in stage one.

Be patient. Become an experienced Doper and you’ll learn discipline. It just takes time.

Just find someplace more interesting on the Internet.

G’wan. We dare ya.

You do it like this. Attach a small cup to the wire connecting your modem to the wall jack. A pipe slowly drips water into the cup. When the cup becomes heavy enough, it pulls the cable loose. Whenever you start browsing the SDMB you first empty the cup, then put the pipe in place and turn the water on. Set the flow at the correct rate so that it takes about an hour before the cup reaching sufficient mass to pull the cable loose.

If you have wireless, then forget it. You’re doomed.

Boring advice…

Since there’s not much else to do on a work computer (with no games etc… to play) simply stay away from the computer. Find something else to do.

I find that when I get laid off and have to access the internet from home via dialup, my connection’s too slow for me to have fun browsing the SDMB, so I vanish for a few months or so.

I can’t actually recommend that anybody use this method, but it’s worked for me.

And stage three is profit :stuck_out_tongue:

Glad you’re enjoying your stay. But the General Questions forum is for factual questions, so I’ll move this thread to the MPSIMS forum.

turn back now before it’s too late!

Too late. We already have you in our tractor beam. Resistance is futile.

Really? Cool!

Um – when does the tapering off thing start?

Will you people stop being so frickin’ interesting??!
I’m trying to work!

:stuck_out_tongue:

Lobsang, Surely you meant to post this in the “What is Irony?” thread.

I’ve never thought about it like this, but you’re right. It IS like a cocktail party. You can chose to get involved in a serious conversation, or you can kind of flit about, eavesdropping on a whole bunch.

Post 6119, I think.

Ah, but I’m learning grasshopper. That was then.
(realy, the most effective way to take a break from this place for me is to turn round, put my feet up (on a desktop unit which is on the floor) and watch the relatively mundane tv that’s on at the time)

Sheesh. This thread obviously belongs in IMHO. Hey. Cajun Man! Get this thread outta here, please!
To the OP: since this is not a serious thread, here’s my advice. Go to a big hardware chain, like Home Depot or something. Buy yourself a sledgehammer. Nothing too heavy. Try out the different ones and pick one that’s most comfortable for you. Wherever you go, for the next two weeks, whenever you see a computer, do the following: hit it as hard as you can with the sledgehammer. Repeatedly. Until it is just sparking rubble. Then, at the end of 2 weeks, post here and tell us all about it.

aww, jgroub, you’ve just become a SDMB groubie.

How to stop, huh. Ummm…remove the letters A D E G H I O P R S T from your keyboard?

How about the letter P?

Unless I’ve just never heard of a groubie.
