…a continuation of the discussion in this thread.
(I just wanna make it clear right off the bat that I’m putting this in the Pit not 'cause I think it’s particularly Pit-worthy, but because that’s where the other thread was.)
Eh, Kell, I don’t think you’re being fair to the Frog in this. The point I was trying to make was that I don’t think we were dealing with a “sick fucking bitch”. I think we’re dealing with just your basic garden-variety jealous girlfriend. Not “tremendous cosmic evil”, just somebody feeling a need for a little attention.
The main thing is, about blaming him for inviting his GF to the Straight Dope Party and then having her make a mess, is that, in this instance at least, the whole “party” analogy breaks down, because if you do bring somebody to a party who creates a scene, then you just grab her and hustle her back out to the car and get her out of there. End of story. But here at the SDMB, once she’s here, she’s here as long as she cares to stay, or until the mods throw her out.
So maybe a better analogy might be to say that CF and his girlfriend are visiting the Straight Dope Art Museum together, and she creates a scene in the Rubens Gallery, saying loudly she thinks Rubens was an incredible sexist pig, painting all those naked women–where are the naked guys? People are turning around and staring. The security guard starts fidgeting. Okay, so what’s the Frog supposed to do? Pick her up bodily and haul her out of there? What if she doesn’t wanna go? Is he supposed to abduct her? Maybe if she makes enough noise or starts drawing on the paintings with Magic Markers, the security guards will throw her out, but otherwise, there’s not much the Frog can do except cringe in embarrassment. He can leave, of course, but as long as she keeps it down to a dull roar, she doesn’t have to leave the museum if she doesn’t want to.
And yeah, I suppose you can yell at him for inviting her to the museum in the first place, but it’s still not his fault if she decided to cause a scene.
I’m trying to visualize myself inviting someone to the Straight Dope and having that person make a complete ass of himself. Would it be fair to blame me? Say I invite my mom to sign up, and she does, but she almost immediately goes hog-wild, trading on her silver hairs to give her immunity from punishment, creating sock puppets, flaming indiscriminately, cross-posting, and just generally causing so much trouble that she gets banned. (Admittedly, this is about as likely as Bill Clinton suddenly announcing he’s gay, but still…)
So say the mods ban her, and she keeps reregistering and coming back. Is this my fault? What am I supposed to do, go over to her house and pull her plug? She’s my mother, she’s 71 years old. She’s an adult. IMO, it’s between her and the Straight Dope administration. I can apologize to the membership for ever having been stupid enough to invite her in, and I can try to talk to her and say, “Hey, you know, you’re really embarrassing me”, but that’s about all I can do. If she’s having so much fun messing around with the SDMB, then nothing her daughter can say is gonna change her mind.
And I don’t think there’s anything Crunchy can really do, either. Whatever’s going on is between Honesty and the admins, it’s nothing to do with him anymore. What’s he supposed to do, go over to her house and take her computer away from her? Spank her? What? She’s an adult.
Threaten not to see her anymore? But it’s his life, too. I though it was just a teeny bit arrogant of the people in the other thread to tell him things like, “This is a psycho who you should break up with right now.” What, you all were never in love with someone who occasionally behaved like a complete ass? You all never overlooked the way the Beloved farts in bed constantly, or thinks black people are just naturally good dancers, or tends to cause scenes in restaurants if the service wasn’t to his (or her) liking? You people all have perfect Significant Others? Well, geez, congratulations, folks. Who did you have to kill to get them?
