He’s been public about it for a few years. He announced his atheism in 2007, but he’s been in congress representing this district for a long time – since 1973.
Looking at previous election results, this is about as good is Stark usually does. In 2008 he got 76%, which was his best ever. Usually he gets around 70%.
But your point is well taken: This is quite a liberal district.
Both Congressional seats in Southern Arizona are still up for grabs, neither has been called. But both Grijalva and Giffords (the Democratic incumbents) are slightly favored to pull it off.
Buck conceded earlier today. Bennet is the senator. I think it was close enough for a while that Buck thought that an automatic recount would be triggered, or was considering calling for one, but when the gap widened, he finally conceded.
Right, but in the American party system you (often) need to be able to win both ways. If there were no parties and no primaries and every election was an open field that would be different (I would personally prefer this, with some kind of runoff mechanism). But success here typically requires appealing to partisans and a more general electorate. It doesn’t really make sense to say that a “stronger” candidate lost in the primary; winning a primary is part of the definition of political strength in this system.
Maybe she did. Mid-terms are usually bad for the incumbent party (though usually not this bad). If I didn’t think I was going to be able to hold certain seats during the upcoming midterms, I’d try to beat every last vote out of them I could too.
We’re headed for another stinking recount in Minnesota. Get ready for another six month onslaught of Republican lawsuits and stalling tactics. The worst of it is that the Minnesota Legislature has been taken over by tea baggers. Pawlenty has helpfully said he stay on as governor until everything is resolved, which means they’ll potentially have several months to ram through tax cuts for the rich and thow elderly and disabled people onto the street before Dayton can get in there and stop the holocaust.
