I like going out to the movies, and a big part of that is the audience experience. You know what I mean, the collective emotions of the people around you in response to the action on the screen.
However, it really pisses me off when someone will bring a baby or very young child into a movie that is likely not going to be good for them, and seemingly are doing so as “something to do” in an effort to keep the kid quiet and happy at minimum cost. One of the most gratuitous examples I’ve seen of this was when a lady brought a very young child into Resident Evil , a film that is definitally not for kids. Why? Why scare your kid? It’s a ZOMBIE movie, dammit! What could have prompted you to bring a small child into the theatre to see this? The little kid cried (and I don’t blame him) until his irate mother dragged him out, very annoyed and likely going to spank him. Then, and this really  's me, she brought him back in after a short time, where the whole thing was repeated again, before she left for good, pissed at having missed the movie.
Is it so hard to either make prior arrangements, stay home or see something your kid would like to see? I’m not saying all parents who take their kids to a movie are doing this, but many are…
This hasn’t happened to me recently, I’ve been lucky. But a few years back our local dollar theater was showing a midnight showing of Seven (or Se7en, whichever). And what do my eyes see in the third row of the theater? A family of four. Mom, Dad, 5 year old and a toddler.
Well bite my nipples and call me an easter egg, I always thought the best way of teaching your children about the 7 deadly sins was through proper raising, good examples, and open dialogue. Apparently it’s much easier to just have them graphically and horribly fucking burned into your mind as a child by an R-rated psycho-fest.
“So Billy, you’ve learned the lesson that lust is bad, because that man was forced at gunpoint to rape that woman to death with a razor-studded metallic strap-on”.
[babbling hijack] What I’d like to see is someone chiming in on the benefits of taking screaming babies to movie theatres. I mean, everybody bitches about it, but apparently there are folks out there that think it’s just a dandy idea. You know, maybe they think that since they’re going to see a scary movie the screaming will be a pleasant bonus for the rest of the audience. Kind of like laugh tracks on sitcoms. C’mon, surely there’s one of you out there that would like to enlighten the rest of us! [/babbling hijack]
