“He said we must be fair today
Equal work means equal pay
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama!”
are clearly indoctrination. Is it a nationwide plot? No. But here it is, right in front of you. I await the mental gymnastics required to somehow justify or minimize it.
I’m not going to bother pointing out why it’s wrong. All of you know why.
Your sarcasm is cute…althought it’s kind of the “whistling past the graveyard” variety.
I thought about making this point at the end of my OP, but I thought it would be too much of a distraction to process it along with the other information. You wouldn’t be so casually flippant if the song had been praising George W. Bush.
Well, since you brought it up, you also would be trying like mad to downplay it if it were Bush.
Yes, yes, it’s about as creepy as those celebrities who pledged to ‘serve’ Obama. Unless someone specifically argues that point, I think you can probably take it as given that people making fun of the situation likely agree on at least that much. Chill, huh? Maybe we can break the vicious cycle of hypocrite-hunting.
No, I wouldn’t. Teaching childen who are barely continent in public to sing the praises of a specific leader of a country is what they do in places like North Korea.
I am a little tense on this subject…especially when I get a vibe from your first reply that you are trying to paint me as a racist. You chose the one set of lyrics that specifically refer to him as a “black American” to respond to me saying that teaching the children to sing the song was wrong.
I am not a racist. I am not a “gun nut”. I am not a “rabid right-winger”. I am an educated American citizen who is far enough to the right of Barack Obama to disagree with him on a number of policy issues.
You know, productivity at my office has gone up 20% since the government made us start singing that song to start the day each morning.
Sorry if I’m being too casually flippant.
BTW, just asking here; is there some actual context to this, or are we just supposed to be outraged without knowing a single thing about how this came about? I mean, there’s no question I’m outraged, you bet. I’m carrying enough outrage around to fill a dump truck. But who do I write to to express my not inconsiderable outrage, anyway?
I was sounding out the freaking lines without watching the video, and the two I quoted don’t match up in my head. The first has 11 syllables and the second has 13. It’s awkward and I was being flippant.
No shit you’re tense, if you’re going to read that much into it. I never insinuated you were a racist, and it never entered my fucking mind. Like I said, chill. I’m not your enemy on this.
If i were a parent, i’d be pretty annoyed if my kid were made to sing a song like that in school. And i’m a supporter of Barack Obama.
While there is no escaping the fact that politics ends up being taught in schools, and that many so-called neutral or objective things we teach children are, in fact, quite political, i think that praising specific, incumbent politicians or political parties is extremely problematic.
On the other hand, i’ll only be able to get really worked up about this when the right consents to getting God the fuck out of science classes.
It came about when the teacher decided to put professionalism aside and thought it would be an enjoyable experience to use the power and authority she had over the young children to have them parrot her personal political beliefs.
The name and city of the elementary school are available in the link. You could start with the school board. I’m sure the superintendent will also be in the office on Monday.
I agree with you on every point you made, even the last one. Creationism is a religious belief. This is probably one of the few times we’ve seen eye to eye, mhendo.
