I had an emergency and didn’t get to see the last ten minutes-could someone please spoiler it for me?
Sherlock faked an overdose and was sent to a hospital/rehab (crappy room, looked like a WWI asylum) and sure enough, Irene (Moriarity) shows up to gloat/feel bad about winning and speak with Sherlock.
Then Sherlock admits he was faking and in comes Watson and police to arrest Moriarity.
You would think the most clever foe of Sherlock might have seen this coming a mile away, or at least have a back up plan for waltzing alone into Sherlock’s unguarded room for a chit-chat, but apparently not. In my opinion, a rather pathetic letdown of an ending for such a mastermind.
By the way, here is a Hollywood Reporter article about the upcoming season 2, with very mild spoilers for the first two episodes (they tell you about location and purpose of location).
I don’t know - I liked that the whole love thing got in her way, and Watson is the one who figured it out.
this -
Yes. The episode(s) was titled “The Woman/Heroine”. From that, I figured Watson would save Sherlock somehow.
Neat twist! Doesn’t look like even Detective Bell knew about it, or maybe he did. He kicked in the bathroom door to find Sherlock and an empty syringe. Or maybe Moriarty really DID have cameras in his house, and she was watching.
Bell was not in on it - clearly the cpt was - everything that happened at the house until the time moriarity showed up had to appear completely legit AND it had to be caught on camera (how else would Moriarity find out?)
Really enjoyed the season finale. Nice twist with Irene/Moriarty. Looking forward to next season!
Season finale was pretty good. I don’t particularly buy that Irene would have turned up to hand the gun to Greek guy herself (we know she’d been working via middlemen forever, so why the sudden change of mind and turn toward risk-taking?) or that she’d so easily be caught in Sherlock’s room by a typical Mentalist-style trick like that (it wouldn’t be admissible in court anyway, would it?), but we can fanwank it away by saying that she was dealing with lots of conflicted feelings the whole time.
And I’m not particularly into girls, but wow that Natalie Dormer is a looker.
Yeah - the gun hand off was very out of character. It was also unnecessary - we already knew she was Moriarity. I guess it was a convenient way to lay out the plot, but no way she does that.
Showing up in the hospital was a combination of love and hubris. She wanted Holmes to come away with her, and the only person who could possible foil her was back on smack. Her web of connections made her invincible (or so she thought).
I like her look when she realized that the mascot had tripped her up.
She’s not nearly as smart as she thinks she is. And she is tripped up badly by being in lurrrve! Sherlock should have made some crack about conjugal visits. And rubbed in that her confession would make the murder of her henchman in front of Sherlock manslaughter. They ought to be able to bring lots of charges. It will be interesting to see how she gets out of this or escapes.
Czarcasm, besides Sherlock tricking Irene/Moriarty into showing up at the hospital, there was a final scene on the rooftop between Sherlock and Watson.
Sherlock is examining his bees, Watson comes up to fill him in on Moriarty being charged and whatnot. Sherlock then explains that he has taken that rare bee and crossbred it with his other bees, and the new bees are beginning to hatch. Thus he has created a new species (:dubious:) and has named it after Watson. He sits down and tells her he will come get her after they all have hatched, she decides to sit down and watch with him.
I really like how their relationship has grown, how both of them have shifted a bit.
I, too, thought Moriarty meeting the Greek in person seemed out of character. Mitigated by the fact she knew he would soon be dead. Good to connect the dots for how the PI agency compromise played in. That security guy’s story was pretty thin, even before Holmes walked in.
I had pegged that the birthmarks would be important for the reveal, but didn’t peg Irene as Moriarty. But I can see how that works for this version. Take the two people that challenge Holmes, make them one. We had to know there was more to Irene Adler than just being an art thief.
Finally saw the finale. “Irene”'s accent was driving me crazy through the first half of the episode. I kept thinking how much I hate it when they hire English actors who can’t do an American accent and make them use one anyway. It was a relief when she turned out to actually be English. (Of course, it also made me wonder why Sherlock couldn’t see through it).
It’s been a good season. Looking forward to the next.
I’m consistently surprised each week by how much I end up enjoying Elementary. I suppose I always underrate it in my head because it’s yet another detective procedural, but it really is quite good.
I saw Watson smile in this episode. She and Sherlock almost never smile.
I recorded it, but it cut off after an hour, so I hope there are reruns this summer.
BTW, I don’t mind spoilers. I still look forward to how this unwinds.
I love Sherlock most of all, but Elementary isn’t far behind. Glad to see that I’m not the only person who regrets the loss of Emily Owens MD.
I hate how she constantly pulls that moue. I think she’d be a lot more attractive if she at least did it less often. It was really distracting, as I found myself watching her face a lot.
I like Sherlock too. I think Sherlock is stylistically stronger, but that Elementary is much more tightly plotted. The mysteries always start out cool on Sherlock, but tend to conclude rather sloppily.
There was another Steven Moffat (creator of Sherlock) show called Jekyll which epitomizes this. The show was sharply produced, had great dialogue, and a very interesting starting premise. The ultimate conclusion seemed rushed and lazy though, as if they really didn’t have any idea how to end this great story they started.
I liked Jonny Lee Miller’s work and continue to enjoy the series overall. I get the twist of changing the important players in Sherlock’s life to women - well, except for Mrs. Hudson, who is now swapped to being a man
But I must say the execution didn’t blow me away. I wish I could put my finger on why - perhaps I thought the actress was too young to be a Crime Lord. I am also wary of mixing a Sherlock Holmes Love Interest with an SH Nemesis. Crafting either to be credible in engaging Sherlock is hard enough; integrating them seems risky at best…
That last episode (of Jekyll). I went from loving the show to thinking it was just alright. Someone needs to stand over Moffat and thwack him with a newspaper when he gets all in love with his cleverness. (And I still like Jekyll and Sherlock and most of Doctor Who…actually, having seen so much of his current work might be adding to my issues with him
)
