There’s currently someone shooting up a local elementary school…
No one I know is involved, but reddit has unconfirmed reports of 5 dead so far. The shooter themselves might’ve been killed by an armed father of one of the other children. All unconfirmed.
My concern for you and yours, and the community as a whole. I don’t want us, as a nation or society, to become numb to these events or consider them inevitable.
Here is the CNN link mentioned by @Beckdawrek for evolving information, but they don’t always stay open past the first hours/days.
We’re in MPSIMS, so I won’t say my closest held feelings on the matter as they are more appropriate to the Pit.
I hope things are better than they sound on the news. I hate this is happening so close to your home – and mine, for that matter, as I’m just over the hills to the west. My best to you and yours, @Reply.
Nothing much has been confirmed as of now, except that there are fatalities, which include children, and the shooter is dead, most likely by a civilian or a bystander.
Coworker’s daughter is safe. It took a few hours to evacuate the kids to the reunification spot.
On the way home, my Lyft driver happened to be one of the evac bus drivers from earlier. He said they shut down the whole school district and rerouted all the school busses to help with the evacuation effort.
The way he told it, the school teachers and staff were pretty shaken, but trying to keep their composure for the kids’ sake. They bused them out one classroom at a time. Fortunately many of the children were too young to really understand what was going on, and didn’t seem as affected as the adults.
This story will soon fall right off the national news pages because:
Soon after, police learned that a community member followed the suspect into the school and shot him. Officers entered the building and found the suspect dead.
Good citizen with his own gun took the shooter out before police could even get set up to intervene. Ending the shooting spree. That doesn’t fit the proper narative.
A 12 gauge with 00 buckshot would make horrible wounds that the hospital has to treat. A 12 gauge slug is probably not survivable. It can punch a large hole in a exterior door.
My heart goes out to the families. I’m thankful the shooter was stopped before attacking more children.
While I am glad that the shooter was stopped, I hate that the story perpetuates the good guy with a gun theory. I still don’t think more guns are the answer.
The father (Gianmanco) had been driving near another car. The driver of the other car verbally confronted the mass shooter, and was shot at in return. Seeing this initial shooting, Gianmanco then followed the mass shooter into the school parking lot, saw the mass shooter force entry by shooting out the locked doors, and continued to fire additional rounds into one classroom.
That’s when Gianmanco entered the building with his legally owned pistol, heard more shots, and saw the mass shooter wrestling with a teacher. This is when he fired and struck/killed the mass shooter.
There was another hero in the incident: A teacher, upon seeing the gunman, threw her cell phone at him, charged him, and wrestled him. (I think this was the same teacher who Giamanco then saw, but it’s not entirely clear).
The mass shooter previously attended the elementary school that was shot up (Silver Rail Elementary).
