Elite Dangerous

Happened across my first black hole but I’m not the first one here. Same with the neutron star in the previous system.

So have you guys seen this smuggling job?

You can do a lot of cool stuff with heat management in this game, it looks like.

I haven’t played yet. Going to start today after I’m done grading, but my two goals are to visit Sol and Sagittarius A* (the black hole at the center of the galaxy).

I simply smuggle via outposts. Only had a problem twice, first time was in a Federation system while the Feds were unfriendly; never saw any local security at an outpost before that. I can only assume they followed me.

Second time was when I somehow triggered Wanted status upon launch and got smoked by the outpost itself.

Smuggling does get easier as commanders increase their relationship with the local authorities. Make friends with 'em and they won’t pay much attention to minor infractions.

First paid expansion coming in time for Christmas: surface landing, exploration, mining, combat, search & rescue!

Oh, nice! Two candidates for terraforming & two Earth-like worlds all in a row and I’m the first one here.

I’ve just got this game from Steam. Any tips on setting up a Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS?

Wasn’t able to investigate any other black dots on the galaxy map. Screwed up about 10K ly from inhabited space and cracked the canopy so I headed back. Got 30 mil out of the trip.

Going to head out again. Think I’ll see how close I can get to the far edge of the galaxy, ~31 ly at a time, stopping by Sag A and the Great Annihilator on my way back.

Too complicated for me.

Played Elite Dangerous and was pretty blown away. Even my wife was impressed and wanted to play…but then…I found out about Star Citizen.

Game over man…game over. Star Citizen wins by a trillion miles.

Of course Elite Dangerous has the advantage of actually being out. Star Citizen is a long way off and a month or so ago there was a bit of a backer’s revolt as time estimates kept slipping and there was no sign of stuff that had been promised.

And should have pretty much everything that Star Citizen currently promises* by Christmas, plus more expansions down the road.

*I think player bases will be the only thing missing and even those should be in eventually.

On second thought, this has got to be wrong. I now suspect what really closes any given system’s objects to discoveries and detailed scans is when that system becomes populated, and who knows when other systems will become populated beyond the ones which currently are.

Elite Dangerous is on sale on Steam, so I finally picked it up, and have been playing through the tutorials.

When attempting to dock, all I could imagine was a fictional docking authority manager saying to his or her underlings, “Did you SEE that moron? Blast 'im before he does any damage!”

Starting to get fun, though.

One of us!

So far, I’ve made it to the Iowhail systems, 16K ly out. I was right, there are some undiscovered black holes around here.

I upgraded to an Adder. Woo-hoo! It’s working out well as an entry-level exploration vessel. I’m traveling pretty light—nothing installed on hard points, so no combat for me—but luckily avoiding interdiction has been no problem. Also, I’ve upgraded most components to lighter versions. I’ve yet to be the first to any star systems, though. I’ve probably only traveled a few hundred light years so far.

Docking is getting easier. Luckily, I only earned a small fine once (for blocking the airlock; going too slow I guess) or twice (for carrying illegal weapons).

My worst habit is not slowing down out of supercruise soon enough, and thereby overshooting my rendezvous, or, worse, being emergency forced into normal space.

My in-game handle is Zaparthes. Feel free to friend me!

Highest purchase priority for now: a better scanner.

I docked last night at Reilly City in the … Turd Wu system?

Who names these things?

Kuk causes some amusement here as it is the local slang term for penis. I have a friend go on a pilgrimage there.

Approaching the galactic core, seeing more solar systems with black holes as their primary.

Guessing I’ll be near the galactic edge in about 14K ly more. Furthest system I’ve found would still be another 9K out, don’t think I’ll be able to get there on ~31 ly jumps. Systems out there are spread far & wide.

It’s a long haul but black hole hunters should head up to Dryau Phylio AQ-Y E1330. Lots of systems with at least one in that neighborhood.

I’ve been bounty hunting in my new viper. Most of the time, I do pretty well, but occasionally I get my ass handed to me. I’ve managed to make a profit at it, but only just.

What factions have you all joined?
