I didn’t know about that until recently. Even then I didn’t do vanity searches, though. I went to Quick Links–>Your Profile–>Find all posts by Cisco.
This doesn’t do anything to find mentions of you in a thread you never subscribed to, or maybe never even opened.
That’s not what **ntucker **was asking about:
Well, son of a gun! It works! And lookee here what I find!
In the thread titled “Lets just ban the troll”. In which I did not participate. In which I am publicly accused of being nemesis to that paragon of civil discourse, Scylla.
He might simply have called me a blackguard, a scoundrel, and a despoiler of maidenly virtue. But to be publicly identified as nemesis to one so widely beloved and admired, one whose very name is synonymous with honesty, integrity, and calm civility…
I’m sorry, I can’t go on. I am distraught, I weep…
No, but that was speculation about why Scylla did vanity searches. The truly vain (like me) do searches to find out if people are talking about them behind their back, so to speak.
Of course it’s complete bullshit. I’ve been working hard specifically to be Scylla’s nemesis ever since I got here. You’re just a piker, but you fall into the job based on what? Random suggestions of warrants and hangings?
As Nemesis, don’t you have like, laser cannon and disintegrator beams and stuff, and some kind of super shield?
Actually, every few weeks or so i do a vanity search for precisely the sort of reason that Scylla did here: to see if my name has popped up in a thread where i am not actually participating. It doesn’t happen that often, but it does happen, and if someone mentions me, or quotes me, in a thread where i’m not, i like to check it out and see if i need to join the conversation.
I’ve done a few vanity searches here, but I picked a bad username for it; I always come up with people talking about Cisco Systems (and if I ctrl+f my name in a thread I always get Troy McClure, SF’s location.) If people have talked about me in threads I haven’t participated in, I don’t know it.
Yeah, it certainly helps to have a username that is not an actual word.
And if you’re name is Liberal, just forget it.
Hey! Quit changing the subject! I am the Pitee, and this is my Pitee party!
I’ve tried an occasional vanity search, but nobody ever talks about me.
I’ve unintentionally mentioned your username in a discussion about hygiene while camping.
The simple fact of doing a vanity search says nothing about Scylla or anyone else. May of us do vanity searches because we don’t want to be rude if someone directly addresses us in a thread we might not have gotten back to. (And once, someone said something really nice about me in a thread I’d never even been in. That was a nice surprise for a vanity search! )
We now return you to your scheduled Pit thread.
No he has sharks with frikkin laser beams on their heads!
My vanity searches usually lead me to find out just what drives people around here batty. Especially after flat tires.
I don’t “subscribe” to threads, so that’s useless to me. I guess some people do it differently. Gosh.
sigh Scylla’s so lucky. I wish I could get elucidator to notice me.

I have heard some people actually enjoy waiting 300 seconds between searches. I guess it is true.

Yeah. Everybody else uses the User Control Panel. Doesn’t count as a search, so there is no 300 second wait between refreshes.
I’m either blind or stupid (I could easily be both), but how do you see your own recent posts from the User Control Panel.
Don’t tell me to remember to subscribe every thread I post in–that’s crazy talk.
