Embarrassing Gaps in your Movie Viewing

Doctor Strangelove, The Seven Samurai, The Godfather & The Godfather II (I’ve seen portions of the first one, but never the entire film), almost all of Woody Allen’s movies, almost all of the ‘great’ European films…

I still haven’t seen *Goodfellas *(though I did catch the last fifteen minutes on Lifetime–of all places–a few moths ago).

All godfathers, scareface, dog day afternoon…casablanca…so…pretty much all the classics less Wizard of Oz, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction

As far as the “great films” go, I’ve either seen or plan to see most of them, so I’m not too embarrassed by any gaps.

I get a little embarrassed when I end up on the fringes of a conversation about some of the pop-culture milestones of the '80s, not because they’re great films that would have inspired me and changed my life but because they were apparently perfectly enjoyable movies that people still remember fondly and that I was apparently too much of an elitist to condescend to seeing.

That was a hell of a sentence but hopefully some glimmer of meaning comes through. Of course I could rent or download most of them now, but it wouldn’t be the same experience as watching them in situ, as it were.

Anyway, it’s fine not to care about popular movies but I think it’s a little perverse to be proud of not seeing them.

Four aces is unbelievable?

How do you know?

Let’s call it even then, since I’ve somehow seen the “King of the World”-scene.

Never seen The Matrix or any of its sequels.

Never seen Reservoir Dogs despite having owned a (pirated) VHS copy for years.

Never seen (or read) Fight Club.

Never seen E.T.

Never seen Casablanca, ditto Gone With the Wind.

Only saw The Godfather a couple of months ago, and haven’t seen parts II or III.

Take any list of the Top 100 Movies of All Time; I’ve seen maybe ten of them, and probably none of the top five (including Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon).

Next, take the 50 Best Picture nominees of the past 10 years. Ive seen maybe ten of them.

Next, take any movie ever made by Quentin Tarantino or Akira Kurosawa. I’ve seen exactly none of them.

Finally, take every James Bond movie ever made. I’ve seen exactly none of them.

Oh, you should watch The Matrix, but skip the sequels and pretend they didn’t exist.

I feel neither embarassment nor pride for gaps in my movie-viewing.

I’ve never seen “The Godfather” or “The Godfather II” from start to finish. I’ve seen good chunks of both on HBO over the years, but never complete. I’ve also never seen “Schindler’s List.”

Casino Royale is roughly three bajillion times better than QoS. Go see it.

There are a lot of movies mentioned above that I haven’t seen, but the only movie made since the 1930s that I am astonished I haven’t seen yet is It’s A Wonderful Life. I don’t know how I lived through the 40s, 50s, and 60s without seeing it at least once; it was on TV a dozen times every Christmas.

Still missing The Wizard Of Oz here, and I may never see it- it’s become a point of pride. It’s so endemic in our culture, though, that I can still correct people when they misquote from it.

Casablanca

ANY Tarantino movie, save for the “Kill Bills”

None of the Godfathers

Scarface

Citizen Kane

About 90% of “classic” Disney movies (Seen and own Lion King and Aladdin, but that’s about it)

Lotta others, but don’t wanna think that much.

I’ve seen over 2,000 features, but I haven’t seen:

Beauty and the Beast (1991), Boyz n the Hood (1991), Dances With Wolves (1990), Platoon (1986), The Last Emperor (1987), Rain Man (1988), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Unforgiven (1992), Braveheart (1995), The English Patient (1996), Gladiator (2000), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Chicago (2002), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Crash (2005), The Departed (2006), No Country for Old Men (2007), The Matrix (1999), Enter the Dragon (1973), A Face in the Crowd (1957), Fargo (1996), Goodfellas (1990), Hoop Dreams (1994), The Nutty Professor (1963), Stranger Than Paradise (1984), The Terminator (1984), Toy Story (1995), The Scarlet Empress (1934), Life of Oharu (1952), Senso (1954), Ordet (1955), L’Avventura (1960), La Dolce Vita (1960), When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960), Accattone (1961), El Cid (1961), Lola (1961), Cleo From 5 to 7 (1962), The Trial (1962), Autumn Afternoon (1962), My Life to Live (1962), Contempt (1963), The Silence (1963), Band of Outsiders (1964), Red Desert (1964), I Am Cuba (1964), Alphaville (1965), many others.

Long, long Netflix queue.

Huh. I’ve seen 85/100. I seemed to have missed the French New Wave. I have no plans to see Goldfinger or any other Bond movie, however.

Maybe I should have entitled this thread Shocking Gaps in Your Movie Viewing instead. Embarrassing was poorly chosen. There are a lot of gaps in my movie viewing, as my Netflix queue is maxed out at the 500 limit.
