In the Which popular TV shows have you not seen a single episode of? thread I pondered which TV show had been seen by every Doper? I was disappointed when my suggestion of I Love Lucy was shot down because it is the most ubiquitous show that I can think of.
But Hollywood has better global reach, so I’ll try again with movies. I found a similar thread from 2010 but that had no poll and devolved into a long list that was hard to collate.
Please indicate any and all movies in the list that you have not seen. By which I mean movies that you did not watch from start to finish.
Frankenstein, Goldfinger, Pulp Fiction. I have basically no memory of Ghostbusters, but I did see it. I THINK I’ve seen 2001 (I’ve definitely seen most of it) but I might have slept through part.
Just Jaws and King Kong. On the one hand, I’m a bit of a classic movie junkie, OTOH, that’s not what I expected to see. I figured it was going to be movies like All About Eve, Some Like It Hot, The Philadelphia Story etc… A few years ago I went through and tried to watch all the movies on all the AFI top 100 lists (there’s a lot of overlap). I think I made it through all but about 10 or 15 of the movies that were on the lists at the time.
ETA, I haven’t seen Frankenstein either. I read that as Young Frankenstein the first time and didn’t check it.
For the sake of marking something I checked **Jaws **- I’ve seen all the famous bits in outtakes, but never the movie as a whole. All the others from start to finish, some several times.
I have seen all except The Princess Bride, Ferris Bueller and *Pulp Fiction. *I THINK I saw Ghostbusters and *Goldfinger, *but don’t remember them at all. I definitely saw the rest.
As recent posts have indicated, at least two people have not seen Star Wars. Lots of people don’t like science fiction or war movies etc. The thrust of the question was to present a mix of both popular and critical successes in the hope that one movie would turn up that everyone had seen. Early numbers show that I was unsuccessful at finding THE ONE.
Classic movies like All About Eve may appear in all of the movie books but those for movie geeks and the general public pays them little attention. On the other hand, Citizen Kane usually tops the movie geek lists, and if people are going to watch one, they’ll watch #1.
Teens are frequent movie-goers, have the most flexible schedules and are curious about culture. So I picked a few that I thought they might stumble across while watching TV on a Saturday night. Like Back To The Future. Hardly a classic, but basic teen fodder.
The most difficult part of creating the poll was to pick out a Disney movie. Everyone watches Disney during their childhood. But fans of Finding Nemo are not necessarily those who would watch Snow White. So no animated features made the list. In the US, the children’s movie with the widest viewership across several generations seemed to be Wizard Of Oz.
edit: I didn’t read where Clairobscur was from. Ferris Bueller has a very American viewpoint and I can understand it may not go over well in some countries. Similarly, I’m not expecting a lot of interest in Gone With The Wind outside the USA.
I watched Gone With the Wind only because I was on a mission to watch all of the ‘AFI Top 100 Films’ a few years back; much like yourself I had no real desire to see it.
I was absolutely blown away. To say it’s a ‘classic’ is an understatement. I highly recommend setting aside an afternoon to see it.
Citizen Kane, on the other hand, left me feeling ‘meh’. I can understand why it’s considered one of the greatest movies ever made, but it simply failed to grab me.
I thought my wife was the only person on earth who hasn’t seen The Wizard of Oz.
I’ve seen most of those. I voted for movies I’ve only seen parts of and got bored with, which includes **2001 **and Gone with the Wind. I’ll give them another try someday.
I don’t think I’ve seen all of Frankenstein, but I might have. The rest I’ve definitely seen, although for a long time I had only seen bits and pieces of Psycho.
