Here’s the question. Is it unreasonable of me to expect to never have to deal with this guy again? Am I going too far, or is it a legitimate demand? I have no evidence that he is capable of violence, but does simply not feeling safe trump this client’s right to deal with our office in person?

As I have a trigger-happy panic reflex, I’m not sure how rational I’m being. Every instinct I have is screaming, ‘‘No, it’s not acceptable for this client to come here, ever, not with 24 hours notice, not with a fox or in a box, NEVER.’’

Sr. Olives says the situation would be upsetting/scary for anyone, and my coworkers have all confirmed that they were upset and frightened too. I have the feeling they are going to fight to keep him out of our center. There were at least three witnesses to this incident so it’s definitely not my word against his. I’m just not sure what’s reasonable.

Sweetheart, you did not overreact. He tried to prevent you from leaving, intimidated you, and chased you down the hallway. I would have dropped him from the program immediately if he threatened one of my staff.

If you don’t mind my asking, what does your employer do, exactly? I’m guessing debt counseling?

It seems like you can block this mental patient from coming up by security but a clear and concise discharge of him as your client also needs to be done. I certainly hope the managers do this and fast.

When all is said and done with this situation, I think the powers that be need to come up with a very clear policy on handling out of control people.

Our office has two steps…

1. If voices are raised, the clients are asked to leave.
2. If they refuse to leave, the police are called.

The police have always been very supportive of this policy although very few clients have waited around to talk to them.

He’s lucky it was you, and not me. He seems to have found EVERY one of my buttons, and he would have been in serious trouble. I had to work with a guy like that, for far too long. Eventually, I had enough, and came to find out that for all the bluster, all the “control”, he was just a big damn wuss. Wanted to kick everyone’s ass, but ran like a little bitch when I finally turned the tables on him.

I hate people like this. I really do. I’m not a “tough guy”, but people like that make me more than a little crazy. If your bosses had any guts, they’d tell that scumbag to take his business somewhere else. The don’t pay you enough to put up with that.
