Empire Total War players

I’m wanting to get back into Empire Total War after having to take several weeks off of the game due to another extended trip (I’ve GOT to get a gaming laptop!). Hopefully there are still a few 'dopers about who are playing the game. My hope in this thread is simply to explore some of the tactics and strategies being used to play, perhaps get some tips. Feel free to take the discussion in any direction about the game you like as well.

My first question is…how do you handle the teeming masses yearning to breath freely? With the exception of the Brits (and the US) I’ve had constant problems with rebellion as my empire expands. The only way I’ve been able to get around this is to basically build the brothel line of buildings whenever they crop up as new buildings, or to destroy things like seminaries and build brothels there instead. The other thing I have had to do is basically not develop the social tech tree much…the only thing I usually research there are the economic line. I also have had to stop building the advanced buildings (steam factories, higher level foundries, mills, etc) as these also set off the population. Even with all of this though I STILL have serious problems with rebellion nearly every game and I end up having to tie down regions with 4-6 regiments (and sometimes having to put an entire army into a region to crush rebellions in several territories as they crop up) that drain the treasury and could be much better used on the frontier.

Secondly…how do you make your money? I’ve tried to use the trading ships but it seems like by the time I have the fleet assets to protect them and the money to buy them I’ve already won the game. What strategy do you use to generate funds for your campaign?

Just some other random questions: What factions do you like best…and why? What’s your strategy on research? Do you prefer to fight the battles automatically or on the tactical map? Do you enjoy the sea battles? What’s your strategy for your navy? Army? What kind of mix of troops (or ships) do you prefer? What’s your strategy for some of the major powers…France? The Brits? Prussia/Austria? Spain?

Your rebellion problems can be solved by a government change. Max out taxes for the plebs pull out the garrisons in your capital and when the rebellion hits side with the rebels. You’ll then have a more school friendly government.

Almost forgot about this thread…didn’t think anyone was interested. I haven’t tried the rebellion thing yet…I remember you or someone in the original Empire thread suggesting it. IIRC all you have to do is take the rebels side and then take the capital…correct?

Yeah. The easiest way to do it is to exempt every other region besides the capital from taxes, then crank them up. That way you don’t have rebellions al across your empire. You’ll need several turns worth of expenses in your treasury though to handle the lack of income.

I’m currently trying to conquer the world as Austria. I’ve got all of europe and russia, with armies stacked up on the Ottoman border ready to take over the rest of the continent by 1770. I’m overly fond of artillery - I know it’s not a very efficient use of unit slots (especially without all the weapons tech) but I like watching the enemy get blown up from afar.
